The Fantastic Four Will Be ‘Very Different’ From Other MCU Movies, Says Human Torch Actor

The Fantastic Four star Joseph Quinn recently shared how the upcoming superhero movie will differentiate itself from other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Quinn — who is playing Johnny Storm/The Human Torch — explained how “it was very clear” from his first meeting with The Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman that Marvel Studios wanted to do something unique with Marvel’s First Family, stating, “There are aspects of it that are very much a singular thing and its own thing.”

Marvel is making sure The Fantastic Four doesn’t fall victim to superhero fatigue

Marvel Studios wanting The Fantastic Four to look and feel like something audiences haven’t seen before in a comic book movie comes after the company’s 2023 offerings largely struggled to leave an impact on the pop culture landscape. Aside from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel’s other two cinematic outings — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels — drastically underperformed at the global box office, leading some analysts to suggest that audiences were suffering from “superhero fatigue.”

Quinn stated that Marvel Studios seems aware of superhero fatigue and is ready to combat it, mentioning how the company is committed to getting the story of the Fantastic Four just right. “There are aspects of it that are very different to other Marvel films. That felt very compelling to me,” he said. “And again, going back to who’s involved, Matt, of course, the director, I think is brilliant, and the cast, and I’ve read it and the script is brilliant. It’s really brilliant. I’m delighted to have this opportunity.”

The actor added, “Superhero movies are movies about people. And if we’re invested in the people and the characters and the peril and the spectacle, then that’s why people go to the theaters to watch films. We’re not just in a penny; we’re in for a pound with this one. We’re going to go for it.”

Marvel’s First Family comes to the MCU

Joining Quinn as part of Marvel’s First Family are Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. Julia Garner, best known for her role in Ozark, has also been cast in The Fantastic Four. She will be portraying the Shalla-Bal incarnation of the Silver Surfer.

The Fantastic Four is scheduled to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
