'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' reveals big surprises in final trailer

The wands are out in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’s final trailer — and so too are a couple of big surprises.

Ahead of the film’s upcoming premiere, David Yates’s J.K. Rowling-penned sequel to 2016’s Harry Potter prequel immerses viewers in a wizarding world at war, courtesy of white-haired villain Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), who intends to decimate a 100-year truce between magical and muggle societies by spearheading a revolution aimed at putting his kind on top. Standing in his way is young Dumbledore (Jude Law), who enlists for this important mission Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his friends Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler).

The above promo indicates that their quest will involve land, sea and air skirmishes, as well as pit them against Grindelwald’s evil minions — including, most exciting of all, Nagini (Claudia Kim), a shape-shifting “Maledictus” circus performer who’s recruited by Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) and who, it turns out, is the future pet snake of Lord Voldemort. Just as enticing is the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it sight of a teenage student Dumbledore and Grindelwald, suggesting that this follow-up will be traveling even further back in franchise time than we first expected.

Also starring Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein and Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange — the once and, possibly, future love interest of Newt — Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will once again journey to both New York and London but, this time around, the story will primarily take place in 1920s Paris, providing yet another stunning locale for supernatural action. And as its latest trailer makes clear, it’ll show off quite a few new creatures for Newt to manage — not to mention that, as we learned on our set visit, it’ll feature at least a couple of scenes at Hogwarts, which will no doubt please the Potterphile faithful.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald debuts in theaters on Nov. 16.
