The 2024 College Football Playoff national championship game got a soulful start. On Monday night (Jan. 8), Fantasia took the field at Houston’s NRG Stadium to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of the matchup between No. 1 University of Michigan and No. 2 University of Washington.

Standing on a raised platform at the 50-yard line, the North Carolina native delivered a stunning performance of the United States National Anthem, a cappella.

As the audience roared in applause, fireworks heightened an excited energy across the stadium as football fans prepared to enjoy the final game of the 2023-2024 season.

Michigan continued to win its first national championship since 1997, defeating Washington with a final score of 34-13 under the leadership of Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh, a former member of the Wolverine football team, earned the first championship in his career as head coach.

“I can now sit at the big person’s table in the family!” shared Harbaugh after the big win per The Athletic. “My dad, Jack Harbaugh won a national championship, and my brother won a Super Bowl. It’s good to be at the big person’s table from now on.”

He continued to discuss the controversy surrounding Michigan, including allegations of recruiting violations, an in-person scouting and sign-stealing scandal, and his suspensions at the beginning of the season.

“The off-the-field issues, we’re innocent and we stood strong and tall because we knew we were innocent. And I’d like to point that out. And these guys are innocent. And overcome that, it wasn’t that hard because we knew we were innocent,” he said, adding the season “went exactly how we wanted it to go.”
