When an excerpt from Britney Spears’ upcoming memoir revealed yesterday that the singer had an abortion during her relationship with Justin Timberlake, fans and non-fans alike were surprised. After all, the two were just starting out their careers when they dated.

Since the news hit the headlines, however, fans have looked back on a specific song written by Spears in 2001, titled “Everytime,” and are seeing it in a whole new light.

In the song’s emotional music video, Spears is seen arguing with her boyfriend while she fights off intrusive paparazzi and nosy fans. After continuing their argument in the hotel room, Spears then drowns in her bathtub before being rescued by her boyfriend and taken to a hospital. At the time (the song was released in 2003), knowing how much Spears struggled with her love life and paparazzi, the meaning of the song seemed quite straightforward.

Now, however, fans are speculating that the song is actually not dedicated to a boyfriend, but to her unborn baby instead. For instance, the lyrics indicate a strong sense of regret on her part and how she’s being haunted by her decision. “And every time I see you in my dreams/ I see your face/ It’s haunting me,” the music reads.

As a reminder, Spears’ abortion confession revealed that the decision to not keep the baby largely came from Timberlake. “I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day,” she wrote in an excerpt obtained by People. However, Timberlake “definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

“I don’t know if that was the right decision,” she writes looking back. “If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”

Those sentiments are, of course, reflected in the song’s lyrics. “Please, forgive me/ My weakness caused you pain/ And this song’s my sorry,” Spears sings. “At night I pray/ That soon your face will fade away.” In addition, in the last scene of music video, Spears witnesses the birth of a baby.

“Knowing the real meaning behind this song now made me break down listen to it,” wrote one fan of the singer on YouTube. “I don’t even want kids myself but I can really feel Britney’s pain and longing for the child she lost. I always loved this song, but now I love it even more.”

“After all these years, this song starts to make sense to me, and I can’t stop myself from shedding tears,” echoed another commenter. “Britney, stay strong. We are all here for you.” Now knowing everything she went through, we couldn’t agree more.
