When you think about JoJo Siwa, you probably think of her ponytail: super high, super tight, super blonde, and loaded with bows. It became her signature style from her first days on Dance Moms, and she practically built a career off that blonde pony. However, fans are now realizing that Siwa isn't a natural blonde and that her mother began bleaching her hair when she was just a toddler.

As noted by BuzzFeed, fans recently discovered that Siwa's blonde hair is the result of bleach and not genetics via a viral tweet that has racked up almost three million views, and, understandably, they were shocked. (This realization resurfaces every few years, including in 2018 and 2021.)

These rumors were solidified by an old clip of Siwa on Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, where you see her mother Jessalynn painting bleach on the child's roots. “Nothing's off limits when it comes to doing what I think will benefit JoJo," Jessalynn says. “She's the Rapunzel of 2013.” The young dancer was nine years old at the time.

In the same clip, Siwa confirms that she's been bleaching her hair since she was teeny tiny. “I've been dyeing my hair since I was like two, maybe one-and-a-half,” she says. “I'm not a natural blonde. I'm actually a natural brown. I get brown roots, so I have to dye it so it looks like I'm a natural blonde.”

Siwa is still blonde today, though she's opted for a darker shade than her bright blonde childhood hue. She said goodbye to the iconic ponytail in 2022, chopping it off in favor of a cute pixie cut. (She also tried out a mullet.) The singer and dancer then opened up about a bald spot, which she said was not the result of the tight ponytail but rather from picking at a stress rash she got while filming Dance Moms, essentially damaging the hair follicle. JoJo Siwa is currently kickstarting the new era of her career with “Karma,” and while the ponytail may be “on vacation,” she's still opting for some unique and daring looks. Case in point below:
