Fans of rival high schools brawl at halftime of basketball game, Indiana videos show

A high school basketball game was canceled in Indiana after fans brawled on the court during halftime, police say.

The fight occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at Washington High School, whose boys’ basketball team was hosting Riley High School, according to the South Bend Police Department.

Videos show multiple fights break out, with dozens of spectators involved. The fights spilled onto the court, and police said they were called to clear the building.

Riley led 30-28 at halftime, but the game was called short because of the brawl, police said. The two high schools are rival opponents, the South Bend Tribune reported.

There were no serious injuries, and police did not make any arrests.

Ryan Varga, the head coach for Washington High School, said in a statement that the “city of South Bend lost tonight.”

“This was immaturity. It was non-students bringing drama to an environment that had nothing to do with it,” Varga said in a statement to 95.7 FM sports director Ang Di Carlo.

Matt Painter, the head coach for the No. 1-ranked Purdue men’s basketball team, was in attendance. He has not commented on the fight.

South Bend is in northern Indiana about 150 miles north of Indianapolis.
