Fans Rally Around Serena Williams as She Shows off Her Postpartum Body — & the Skirt That’s Not Quite Fitting

Listen, we’re not here for the discourse about how moms need to “bounce back” to their pre-baby body. I think it’s utter BS. But what we are here for is moms being comfortable in their postpartum bodies. And that can come in a lot of different forms. For Serena Williams, it would seems it would make her feel a lot better if she could fit into one of her skirts.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion posted a video on Instagram back in January of herself trying on a floor-length denim skirt. She bought the Valentino piece while pregnant and figured it would fit once she no longer had a baby bump. But … it’s still a work in progress.

“Houston, we have a problem,” she said when the skirt stopped at the bottom of her butt in January.

Now, “back by popular demand,” Williams — who shares 6-year-old Olympia and baby Adira with co-founder of Reddit Alexis Ohanian — tried the skirt on again. As she started pulling it up, she said she didn’t know if there would be much of a change. “I’ve been gymming a lot, but I don’t know if the needle is moving,” she said.

As she kept hiking and jumping and shimmying, the skirt finally landed about an inch higher up on her booty. “I can’t say I’m happy about this, but it’s getting there,” she conceded.

Fans loved this honest and relatable video. After all, a lot of postpartum mamas are doing the same hopeful shimmy, and it’s not easy to show your 17.2 million followers that you’re not quite there yet.

“Thank you for doing this and showing that it’s a process after giving birth for world class athletes,” Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer said. “You’re even more stunning and real!”

“Thanks for showing us, that you have the same struggles we do,” another said.

“I feel every little piece of this deep in my soul,” someone added.

“I’m crying. I love that she would show us this.”

“It’s ok,” another commented insisted. “You don’t need this Pentecostal skirt. It’s triggering me lol but you look amazing gorgeous!!!!!”

And yes! That! She looks amazing, whether or not she can fit into this Valentino skirt. It’s an arbitrary (yet clearly meaningful) marker that she’s set for herself and despite it not fitting, she looks great. She looks strong and powerful and healthy in a body that welcomed a second daughter into the world just nine months ago. If it doesn’t fit the next time she tries it on, commenters suggest Williams tries putting it over her head or that she sizes up (Valentino would definitely send another over to the tennis legend!).
