As soon as “Kick It 4 Now” starts, it’s clear what kind of song THE NEW SIX (TNX) have prepared. The six-member act didn’t hold back when it came to conjuring throwback sounds and aesthetics for the lead single off their new mini-album, titled BOYHOOD. From the outfits to the synths and choreography, “Kick It 4 Now” feels like a clear nod to a bygone era of boy bands.

THE NEW SIX (Kyungjun, Taehun, Hyunsoo, Junhyeok, Hwi, and Sungjun) debuted in spring of 2022 under P NATION, the label and management company led by K-pop legend PSY, which Hyunsoo describes as “very caring and friendly.”

The group was forged in the fires of a competition show called Loud, a new entry into South Korean “survival” shows that requires aspiring performers to demonstrate their skills in the hopes of making the lineup for an idol group. The young men who made the cut for THE NEW SIX are the members of the first boy group for the label.

Watch the music video for “Kick It 4 Now” and read on for the full Q+A with the rising band.

Congrats on the new mini-album! It’s so fun and refreshing. What are some of your favorite summer songs?

Taehun: I think I listen to a lot of exciting songs in the hot summer! Last summer, I listened to “That That” (Prod. & Feat. SUGA of BTS) that our CEO PSY and Suga of BTS collaborated on. This summer, I think our members are listening to our title song “Kick It 4 Now” the most — it’s a cool and exciting song that’s good to listen to on a summer vacation or drive, so please listen to it a lot!

The EP definitely has a throwback sound to it — talk to me a bit about what made you want to go into music growing up. Do any of you have a specific moment where you knew you wanted to set on the path to becoming an idol?

Kyungjun: When I first started to settle in Korea, I was cast frequently, so I thought I might as well give it a shot. I think thats how I naturally started setting my path on becoming an idol.

Sungjun: When I was a student, during a school trip, I went onstage for a talent show recommended by my friends. I liked the cheers I received and wanted to feel that thrill I felt for the first time in my life, so [from then on] I dreamed of becoming a singer.

I spoke with PSY recently about his work both as an entertainer and manager/head of P NATION. What’s it like working with him and being part of this company?

Hyunsoo: I think it’s an honor to be with our PSY Daepyonim (CEO), who is our senior that we look up to. PSY Daepyonim is very caring and friendly. Even though he’s busy, he would come to our practice and encourage us, and lead us by sharing stage feedback. He told us, “The best is good, but let’s be ‘the only.'” So I’m working hard thinking about this.

“By You,” off this new EP, is so fun. Do you guys have any favorite memories from working on this album together?

Junhyeok: During the music video shoot, there was a part where I danced with my dance teacher in the group dance scene, and it was hard to hold back my laughter because he was dancing right in front of me. In the middle, Hwi couldn’t hold it and laughed, too, which was the most memorable.

What’s something you’ve learned from one of your bandmates lately?

Hwi: Taehun stretches every day when he has free time, so I have been following him whenever I can. My body is feeling sore due to our busy schedule and intense choreography.

What are some of your favorite ways to relax between schedules these days?

Sungjun: I sleep long hours, or play games or go shopping. And I spend time reading letters from my fans.

What’s been inspiring you lately as an artist or performer?

Hwi: After the album concept was set as retro, I think I watched a lot of videos of our seniors. I especially watched a lot of Michael Jackson, the legendary artist who represents new jack swing. When I first started practicing choreography of the song, my dance teacher told me to refer to the gestures and stage manners of the new jack swing genre, so I looked up a lot of videos.

In addition, we looked up a lot of performances of songs such as Bruno Mars’ “Finesse.”

Song Rec of the Week:

One thing I personally love about ATEEZ is that they’re completely out of their minds. Their latest single is unhinged in all the best ways, and the music video is a must.
