While plenty of details can be faked in the world of entertainment, great chemistry is not one of them. Look no further than Bora and Hyolyn, better known together as SISTAR19, for proof of that. As part of K-pop’s formidable “second generation,” or artists who debuted and performed between the years 2005 and 2011, these two carried quite a few torches: long before K-pop had the global recognition it bears today, SISTAR19 were nominated at the World Music Awards all the way back in 2013.
Known for their fiery onstage energy and the balance between Hyolyn’s vocals and Bora’s rapping, SISTAR19’s 2024 reunion embraces so many of the aspects that made them beloved upon debut. K-pop fans have often been caught up in debates about these different “generations” of K-pop as of late, with some observations carrying more truth than others — some fans have pointed out that songs and albums are getting shorter (true), while others complain that there are no more great vocalists in the genre (obviously false).
“When I hear such discussions, it feels like despite a relatively short period, there’s been enough development and change,” Bora tells Consequence. “I find it remarkable and heartening that K-pop is making such leaps and bounds.”
Back with as much passion as ever, the two seem thrilled to be working together again. Their new single, “NO MORE (MA BOY)” references the song that put them on the map in a big way, 2011’s “Ma Boy.” Here, Bora and Hyolyn are making it clear — it’s a fresh, new era for SISTAR19.

Congrats on this comeback! From everything I’ve read and seen, it seems like you two are really excited about this project. What did it feel like to slip into these roles working together? Was there any adjustment period, or did everything happen naturally?
It was truly perfect timing for all of us (members and our companies). The break leading into our first meeting about the comeback felt so seamless.It didn’t feel like we were reuniting after a long time; everything just flowed naturally!
You two have always been ahead of the curve and total trendsetters. What are some things that have you excited about making music right now?
We are working to show our original musical color with added trendiness. We made efforts to avoid leaning towards one side, but rather combine both elements to make it something special.
“NO MORE (MA BOY)” is such a bop; it reminds me of something Dua Lipa might release. Pink Slip, one of the collaborators on the track, is great, too. What was it like putting that single together? Are there any days in the studio or practice room that stick out for you?
Thank you so much. We also really love this song! Especially because the concept and mood resonate well with us, it feels comfortable. We spent a lot of time working together this time, and the process was genuinely enjoyable.
There’s been a lot of conversation these days, especially on social media, about the differences between generations of K-pop and how these changes are manifesting with each iteration. Did you notice anything different about promoting this time around?
Bora: Personally, I haven’t felt the generation gap as I encountered discussions about it. When I hear such discussions, it feels like despite a relatively short period, there’s been enough development and change to warrant being categorized into different generations. I find it remarkable and heartening that K-pop is making such leaps and bounds.
You were both obviously extremely involved in the construction of both the songs on the single album. After flexing your creative muscles in some other spaces, what was most exciting about focusing on this single album?
Hyolyn: As it’s been a while since our last album, we approached this with a cautious mindset rather than a light-hearted one. We wanted to present better songs and performances, so we put more thought and effort into these aspects. I’m just so happy to be united with Bora for music activities.
