Fan Chant favorites CRAVITY are back, this time to discuss their recent EP, SUN SEEKER. Summer may have dipped over the horizon, but this latest project from the nine-member Starship Entertainment group is their warmest, brightest effort yet. Despite the fact that the clock is ticking towards midnight when we jump on Zoom, Serim, Allen, Jungmo, Woobin, Wonjin, Minhee, Hyeongjun, Taeyoung, and Seongmin are as bubbly as ever.

Following their playful, sweet spring project MASTER: PIECESUN SEEKER makes things bigger and continues to solidify the group’s reputation for addictive melodies. “Most of the songs on this album have a bright and playful sound, and we solidified even more of how CRAVITY will sound, and how to stand out,” notes Allen. “This entire album has a theme of youth and seeking goals.”

Members Allen and Serim wrote on most tracks of the project, with Woobin also contributing to the lyrics of the undeniably catchy “Vibration.” The guys were also more involved with the choreography than ever before, and Allen reveals that the moves for “Ready or Not” changed multiple times in an effort make it as accessible as possible. “We wanted people who don’t know how to dance to follow along, too,” he explains. “It was a challenge, but we’re happy with how it came out. Hopefully a lot of people participate.”

2023 marked more new ground for the nine-piece act, including an ongoing world tour and a second appearance at KCON LA. “We had the opportunity to go to KCON LA last year, and this year we had the opportunity to see how many more LUVITY were present,” says group leader Serim. “I’m so happy we had a visible growth.” CRAVITY also filmed their music video for SUN SEEKER‘s first single, “Cheese,” in Los Angeles. Jungmo, in particular, loved the experience. “I felt like, ‘This is Hollywood!'” he remembers.

While many K-pop groups are content to perform without behind-the-scenes involvement, CRAVITY is not one of them. The guys are developing their sound, their style, and their signature differences to stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape, while also mostly staying in the cheerful pop lane where they seem to thrive. Ever-energetic Woobin (who also adamantly expresses his desire to try Nashville hot chicken upon learning where I’m calling from), shares that he’s been inspired by super-producer and songwriter Labrinth as of late. He is curious about incorporating more dreamy, synth-inspired elements into CRAVITY’s sound.

“Labrinth was my recommendation,” Taeyoung says happily, with Woobin’s arm slung over his shoulders. “But my all-time inspiration is DPR IAN. His voice, his acting, his look — everything is just perfect.” Taeyoung is also potentially open to emulating another quality of DPR IAN’s; “I’m thinking positively about tattoos, so maybe someday,” he says.

Allen, meanwhile, has enjoyed promoting alongside Young K from Seoul-based pop-rock group Day6 recently, and would love to see the group collaborate with him. For Wonjin, it always comes back to Justin Bieber, whose vocal runs inspire him to keep learning and growing.

As they continue the 2023 “MASTERPIECE Tour,” they have one eye on the horizon and all the places they’d still like to visit to meet their fans, LUVITY. They hope to someday bring their tour to Malaysia, and Hyeongjun would love to see Singapore. Indonesia is also top of their list, as well, and Allen notes the passion of their fans in Jakarta that they’d love to meet in person.

When asked what other things they’re curious about trying, in music, onstage, and beyond, the group comes back to how much fun they have performing with their fans, and how they could increase that energy even more going forward. “We don’t have an EDM banger in our discography yet,” says Allen. You heard it here first — CRAVITY is ready to see the crowd head-banging.

Yes this song is five years old, yes it’s been on repeat in my household this week. Don’t worry about it.
