Why this famous actress has to spend thousands of dollars for red carpet events

The red carpet can be a source of a lot of stress for celebs — especially the ones who buy their own dresses, as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator and star Rachel Bloom recently revealed.

“What also has become apparent when I have to get clothes for these events is that I have a normal body,” the actress told Wealth Simple. “A lot of fashion houses are reluctant to lend clothes that aren’t in the sample sizes of 0 and 2, so it’s getting harder and harder for me to find clothes without buying them.”

So buy the fancy clothes she has — which definitely adds up (even if you’re making tens of thousands of dollars on a TV show. “Your typical nice designer dresses, at least the kind of stuff that I wear for events, can range from $500 to $3,000, and you want to wear a different outfit for every event because it’s a whole red carpet thing,” Bloom said. “It’s a lot of dresses. I guess it’s all part of the job.”

Yet, as Bloom noted, her personal sartorial problems speak to a larger problem with the fashion industry. “My body size is literally normal and healthy, but when you put me next to a model, I look obese.”

She’s not the first to speak out about this type of issue. Comedian Leslie Jones had trouble securing a designer to dress her for the Ghostbusters premiere, and Project Runway Season 4 winner Christian Siriano answered her call, er, tweet for help, creating a stunning red off-the-shoulder gown for her.

And Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard has spoken up about this as well. She’s a size 6, which is beyond normal in the real world. In Hollywood, which relies on sample sizes (translation: 0), not so much. It took her years to learn to love herself and embrace her shape. She bought her own dress, a Jenny Packham stunner, to wear to the 2016 Golden Globes. And she wore a $240 off-the-rack Topshop number to the Critics’ Choice Awards the same year.

Orange Is the New Black‘s Dascha Polanco told Vogue that while “fashion in my real life is more important to me than fashion in my acting life,” she also has issues dressing for the red carpet.

“I understand that it’s business, but still, it’s like, really?” she told the publication. “My industry friends, who are clear and honest with me, say, “Girl, they don’t have your size, and you’re not at that level yet, so you have to either move that way or just build those relationships so that later in the future maybe it happens.”
