How Family Traumatized After They Claim They Were Attacked And Mocked Because Of Race Can Start To Heal

Hate crimes are on the rise in the United States. From 2020-2021, a sample from some of the largest cities in America shows that a little over 8,000 hate crimes were reported, however, the Justice Department believes the actual number might be much higher. Patricia and her parents, Nerissa and Gabriel, believe they are hate crime victims. They claim they were mocked for being Asian and physically and verbally assaulted outside a fast-food restaurant. The family says they are traumatized by the attack and fear leaving their house alone. “This kind of thing does have an effect, particularly when you’ve been physically attacked,” Dr. Phil tells the family on Tuesday’s episode, “The Invisibility of Anti-Asian Hate.” “You can experience PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – and this is an anxiety disorder that can affect the brain itself. It can get in a loop, and most definitely, can leave you where you respond to noises, you respond to triggers. It comes up in your thinking, and you can have nightmares about it. It can cause you to shrink your world up and really withdraw.” In the video above, Dr. Phil offers the family ideas for how they can begin to work through their reported trauma. On Tuesday, hear what the family claims happened to them -- which was caught on cell phone video – and how they claim they were treated by the police. Check local listings to see where you can watch.
