Family of backpacker, 21, who disappeared from beach party in Cambodia fly to join search for her

The family of a British student who disappeared in Cambodia after a beach party have flown to the country to search for her.

Amelia Bambridge, 21, was last seen in the backpacker resort of Koh Rong in the early hours of Thursday before she was reported missing by concerned friends.

Members of her family have flown from the UK to Cambodia on Saturday where police and volunteers have begun their search of the beaches, sea and the jungle.

Amelia's belongings including her handbag, phone and bank cards were found on the beach, located off the south-west coast of the South-East Asian country, which her family say is “out of character”.

Her friend Ryan Harris told the BBC that “alarm bells started" when she could not be found after the party.

"She always sticks with the group. She never wanders off on her own," he said.

Mr Harris, 18, from Worcester, befriended Bambridge in Phnom Penh then travelled with her and other friends to Koh Rong on 19 October.

A friend who was at the event, on Police Beach said that the last time she saw her she had a few drink but was “sober”.

Concern was raised on Thursday when Bambridge was not seen at the hostel on Koh Rong, where she had stayed and left her passport.

She also failed to meet a friend for a scheduled ferry trip.

Ms Bambridge's sister Georgie said the family was in touch with police and trying to stay strong as concerns grew.

Mr Harris was staying on a neighbouring island with another group at the time of the party.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: "We are assisting the family of a British woman who has been reported missing in Cambodia and are in close contact with the Cambodian police."
