Family of Miami Mom, Her 5-Year-Old Son Mourn Their Deaths After She Jumped Off High-Rise Balcony
The mom who allegedly threw her 5-year-old son off the balcony of a Miami high-rise building and jumped to her own death has been identified.
Family members revealed 37-year-old Solange Matos, also known as Solanye Virginia Matos, as the woman who fell more than 14 floors from the Brickell City Centre Monday night, according to Telemundo, Univision and WTVJ.
A Miami Police Department spokesperson recently confirmed the deaths to PEOPLE, sharing that, at first, it was unclear whether the pair fell accidentally or on purpose. After an investigation by the department’s Homicide Unit, the incident was declared a murder-suicide.
A police spokesperson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment on Wednesday.
On Monday evening, Miami Fire Rescue responded to a “possible jumper” at the building. Upon arrival, authorities found the young boy unresponsive on a sixth-floor terrace. Nearby, the mother’s body was found in the shrubs.
The boy was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ruder Trauma Center, where he died of his injuries later that night.

The pair was believed to have fallen from at least the 20th floor, according to the Associated Press.
“My family group is heartbroken and full of tribulation,” a family friend wrote on Facebook in Spanish.
“It’s horrible, so sad. You think the worst, especially cause you’re a mom,” Maria Elias, who lives in the building, told WTVJ.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Swire Properties, which owns Brickell City Centre, said, “We are heartbroken by this incident, and our deepest sympathies are with the family and their friends during this difficult time.”
