The Temecula home was destroyed after the car crash early Thursday, officials said.

A car flew off a California highway and crashed into a home that burst into flames early Thursday, fire officials said.

According to CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department, the car flew into the two-story home on Fifth Street in Temecula around 2:48 a.m. local time, "resulting in the residence becoming fully involved with fire."

The fire was contained just after 4:15 a.m., and the American Red Cross is assisting the residents, the department said.

The CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department had no additional comment when reached by PEOPLE on Friday.

NBC affiliate KNBC-TV reported that the car veered off the 15 Freeway before the crash, waking up the family inside the home.

Resident William Rindone told the outlet that before the home became engulfed, the "first thing" he noticed was "smoke and dirt flying up." He then smelled gas. "We knew we had to get out fast," he continued.

Family member Angel Vega told CW affiliate KTLA-TV that the car hit the fuse box and then saw the flames. "I’m trying to run my grandma out and the flames are right next to us,” Vega added. “It was definitely very traumatic."

“We’ve just got to move on, pick ourselves up and carry on as a family," Vega added.

The crash is the fourth time a car has crashed off the freeway and onto their property, according to KNBC-TV. The family has asked for authorities to put up a guardrail near the highway to protect the nearby homes, but nothing has been done, per KTLA-TV.

Two people were inside the car at the time of the crash, per KTLA-TV. It wasn't immediately clear what led to the crash or if the driver would face charges.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by a loved one said they're hoping to raise money to help the family. As of Friday afternoon, more than $3,000 had been raised.

"They have been shook and up since this accident occurred with no where to go but sit across the street from the neighbors front yard to watch their house burn down and firefighters put it out," the organizer said Thursday.
