You’re familiar with the EGOT? Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the EGGOCC

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an EGGOCC if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an EGGOCC should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”

What is an EGGOCC, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four trophies isn’t all that common an achievement.

The Emma4Emmy campaign, if you will, is just starting to heat up. Stone – hot off of her Oscar, Golden Globe and Critics Choice wins this year for “Poor Things” – currently ranks third with 11/2 odds in Gold Derby’s combined odds at the moment, trailing only Jennifer Aniston for “The Morning Show” and Imelda Staunton for “The Crown.”

Here are the 19 actresses who have turned the EGGOCC trick to date, in alphabetical order:

  • Patricia Arquette

  • Kathy Bates

  • Halle Berry

  • Olivia Colman (contending at the Emmys this year in movie/limited series supporting actress for “Secret Invasion”)

  • Viola Davis

  • Laura Dern (contending at the Emmys this year in comedy supporting actress for “Palm Royale”)

  • Allison Janney (contending at the Emmys this year in comedy supporting actress for “Palm Royale”)

  • Anne Hathaway

  • Nicole Kidman (contending at the Emmys this year in drama supporting actress for “Special Ops: Lioness” and in movie/limited series actress for “Expats”)

  • Regina King

  • Brie Larson (contending at the Emmys this year in movie/limited series actress for “Lessons in Chemistry”)

  • Helen Mirren

  • Julianne Moore (contending at the Emmys this year in movie/limited series actress for “Mary & George”)

  • Meryl Streep (contending at the Emmys this year in comedy supporting actress for “Only Murders in the Building”)

  • Emma Thompson

  • Kate Winslet (contending at the Emmys this year in movie/limited series actress for “The Regime”)

  • Reese Witherspoon (contending at the Emmys this year in drama actress for “The Morning Show”)

Meanwhile, there have been only five actors who have won each of the Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice honors. Downey, who is currently the frontrunner in the Gold Derby combined count for movie/limited series supporting actor with 5/1 odds, is hoping to become the sixth actor to complete the EGGOCC quartet for his work in the seven-part HBO limited “The Sympathizer,” premiering April 14. Downey is of course coming off his having run the table this past awards season for “Oppenheimer,” including winning Oscar, Golden Globe and Critics Choice honors as well as a SAG Award for the role.

  • Mahershala Ali

  • Brad Pitt

  • Christopher Plummer

  • Geoffrey Rush

  • Forest Whitaker

It should also be noted that there have been several dozen previous Oscar winners who, like Stone and Downey, have yet to cop a fourth trophy to complete their EGGOCC. Typically, they lack either an Emmy or a Critics Choice win. That list includes, among male actors, Jack Nicholson, Kevin Spacey (he lacks an Emmy despite a dozen nominations), Sean Penn, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jamie Foxx, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Colin Firth, Michael Douglas, Jeff Bridges, Daniel Kaluuya, Anthony Hopkins, Tim Robbins, Javier Bardem, Gary Oldman, Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Matthew McConaughey, among others.

Academy Award-winning actresses who remain just one victory short of an EGGOCC include Helen Hunt, Gwynyth Paltrow, Octavia Spencer, Cate Blanchett, Hilary Swank, Renee Zellweger, Julia Roberts, Ellen Burstyn, Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Hudson, Sissy Spacek, Jessica Lange, Ariana DeBose, Cher, Jessica Chastain, Sally Field, Holly Hunter, Shirley MacLaine, Mira Sorvino, Jennifer Connelly and Mo’Nique, among others.
