The docuseries delves into the Carters’ music careers, relationships and the “tragedies and headline-making events of the past few years,” including sexual assault allegations against Nick brought on by three women: Ashley Repp, Shannon “Shay” Ruth and Melissa Schuman of the girl group Dream.

Repp, Ruth and Schuman appear in the documentary, which also chronicles the “intense backlash” they endured from speaking out and how their lives have been impacted.

Schuman first went public with rape allegations in 2017. She accuses Nick of raping her in 2003 and filed a lawsuit against him in 2023. Repp, who accuses Nick of sexually assaulting her in 2001, sued him for sexual battery in 2022. Ruth sued in 2022 accusing Nick of raping her when she was 15 years old.

The Backstreet Boys singer has denied sexual assault allegations and countersued Schuman and Ruth in 2023. According to The Wrap, Nick’s attorney’s posted documents in response to interviews featured in the docuseries via this website.

“These are exactly the same outrageous claims that led us to sue this gang of conspirators,” Nick’s attorney, Dale Hayes Jr., said in a statement to CNN. “Those cases are working their way through the legal system now, and, based on both the initial court rulings and the overwhelming evidence, we have every belief that we will prevail and hold them accountable for spreading these falsehoods.”

The documentary features social media clips of Aaron backing his brother’s accusers, which resulted in a public feud between the brothers leading up to the 34-year-old singer’s death in 2022.

In addition to the three women, Fallen Idols features interviews with Nick and Aaron’s maternal uncle, a former Backstreet Boys producer, Backstreet Boys fans, Nick’s ex-girlfriend and former Pussycat Dolls member Kaya Jones and Melanie Martin, Aaron’s former fiancé.
