‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ Cast Guide: Meet the Actors Behind Edgar Allan Poe’s Usher Family

The Flanaverse is back!

More from Variety

Mike Flanagan, longtime horror creator and showrunner of “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Midnight Mass” and “The Midnight Club,” has returned for spooky season with a new offering, “The Fall of the House of Usher.” This means it’s also time to reunite the members of his Flanaverse, the beloved collection of actors that Flanagan collects and casts in each of his twisted tales. As Flanagan’s IMDB page grows, so does the Flanaverse, and the new Netflix’s series “Usher” is assembling what could be the biggest cast of Flanagan favorites of all time.

We’ve cobbled together this list of Flanaverse all-stars and rookies in a “House of the Fall of Usher” character guide, so you can keep track of who is who, and where and when you’ve seen them all before.

This modern take on the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name transports fans into the world of the Usher family, led by sibling duo Roderick and Madeline. Together, the twins have headed Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, establishing an empire of wealth, privilege and power — but at a cost. The family’s dark, shady past seemingly comes to light as heirs from the dynasty begin dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from Madeline and Roderick’s youth. Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood and Rahul Kohli join newcomers (to the Flanaverse) Mary McDonnell and Willa Fitzgerald. Check out our full character breakdown below.

The eight-episode series is now available to stream on Netflix.

Carla Gugino as Verna

Carla Gugino stars as Verna, the mysterious scorned woman seemingly inflicting pain (and murder) onto the Usher family. Having met both Roderick and Madeline in the years of their youth, Verna mysteriously returns to bring the family’s dark, shady past to light.

Gugino has previously starred in Flanagan’s film “Gerald’s Game” (she played Jessie, the woman tragically handcuffed to the bed), she also played Judge in “Midnight Mass,” Jamie in “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and Olivia Crain in “The Haunting of Hill House.”

Bruce Greenwood as Roderick Usher

Bruce Greenwood plays Roderick, patriarch of the Usher family and twin brother to Madeline. As the CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, Roderick’s surplus fortune has served his children well — so far. Roderick has six children by five mothers: Frederick, Tamerlane, Victorine, Napoleon, Camille and Prospero. Frederick and Tamerlane are the children of Roderick’s former wife, Annabel Lee, the only one of his children’s mothers whom he ever married. Roderick is currently married to his second wife, Juno Usher.

Previously, Greenwood co-starred with Gugino as Gerald in Flanagan’s film “Gerald’s Game.” He also played Dr. John in “Doctor Sleep.”

Mary McDonnell as Madeline Usher

Mary McDonnell stars as Madeline Usher, the silent leader of the Usher family. Backing her twin brother Roderick for quite some time while building their pharma empire, it’s clear Madeline will do whatever it takes to maintain her success. She is aunt to Roderick’s six children: Frederick, Tamerlane, Victorine, Napoleon, Camille and Prospero.

“Fall of the House of Usher” is McDonnell’s first project with Flanagan. However, she is well-known for her past work on series such as “Battlestar Galactica” and in the film “Dances With Wolves.”

Carl Lumbly as Detective C. Auguste Dupin

Detective C. Auguste Dupin, played by Carl Lumbly, is carrying a 30-year-old grudge against the Usher household. Dupin is a smart and decent human being, so naturally, he finds the Usher family morally repugnant and spends all his time trying to dismantle what he has labeled, the “Usher Crime Family.”

Lumbly was in Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep” playing Dick Hallorann.

Henry Thomas as Frederick Usher

Henry Thomas stars as Frederick Usher, the oldest of Roderick Usher’s children and first in line to take over the family company — although considered the least capable and berated by his younger siblings. Frederick and Tamerlane are Roderick’s only two children by ex-wife Annabel Lee, a point of pride for the siblings who call their brothers and sisters the “bastards.” He is married to Morelle Usher with whom he shares daughter Lenore, the only grandchild of Roderick.

Thomas has previously appeared in the Flanaverse as young Hugh Crain in “The Haunting of Hill House,” the bartender in “Doctor Sleep,” Freedom Jack in “The Midnight Club,” Ed Flynn in “Midnight Mass” and Henry Wingrave in “The Haunting of Bly Manor.”

Samantha Sloyan as Tamerlane Usher

Samantha Sloyan was cast in the role of Tamerlane Usher, the second eldest of Roderick Usher’s six children and his eldest daughter. Tamerlane is sure that her father’s empire will never be hers, so she embarks on a personal journey to create her own business with her husband Bill (the Goldbug wellness empire). Tamerlane and her brother Frederick are the only two Usher siblings who share a mother, Annabel Lee, who is also the only woman Roderick ever married. Tamerlane and Frederick call their four other siblings the “bastards.”

Sloyan has appeared in a great number of Flanagan’s projects, including “Hush,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass” and “The Midnight Club.”

T’Nia Miller as Victorine LaFourcade

T’Nia Miller plays the third-eldest heir of Roderick Usher, scientist Victorine LaFourcade. When her father seems intrigued by one of her latest health inventions made in collaboration with her surgeon romantic partner, Dr. Alessandra Ruiz, she goes balls to the wall and begins testing her new heart mesh on humans. Victorine’s mother was not married to Roderick, and she is considered to be among his four “bastard” children.

Miller starred in Flanagan’s “The Haunting of Bly Manor.”

Rahul Kohli as Napoleon ‘Leo’ Usher

Rahul Kohli stars as Napoleon “Leo” Usher, a video game patron and socialite playboy. His drug habit becomes an issue for his boyfriend, Jules. He is the fourth child of Roderick Usher, the second-eldest son and considered one of the four “bastard” offspring, as his mother was not ever married to Roderick.

Kohli has also starred in Flanagan’s “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Midnight Mass” and “The Midnight Club.”

Kate Siegel as Camille L’Espanaye

Kate Siegel stars as Camille L’Espanaye, the fifth-eldest of Roderick Usher’s children, who is also in charge of public relations for the Usher family. She knows the dirty secrets of those around her, and can make turn bad news into positive press. Camille is one of Roderick’s four “bastard” children, as her mother was never married to Roderick.

Siegel, who is married to Flanagan and a frequent collaborator of his, has also starred in “Hush,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Midnight Mass.”

Sauriyan Sapkota as Prospero ‘Perry’ Usher

Sauriyan Sapkota stars as Prospero “Perry” Usher, the sixth and youngest of Roderick Usher’s children, who wants to use the family fortune to lead a hedonistic lifestyle. He is one of Roderick’s four “bastard” children, with only the eldest two Usher siblings having been born to one of Roderick’s wives.

Sapkota has previously appeared in Flanagan’s Netflix horror series “The Midnight Club.”

Mark Hamill as Arthur Pym

Mark Hamill stars as Arthur Pym, the mysterious lawyer of the Usher family who is extremely dedicated to his job — no matter the ethical circumstances.

This is the first collaboration with Flanagan for the famous “Star Wars” alum.

Matt Biedel as William Wilson

Matt Biedel stars as William Wilson, Tamerlane’s kind and devoted husband. Known as “Bill-T” to his bevy of online followers, Wilson is the face of the wellness empire “Goldbug” that created with his wife. He’s always ready to sweat it out either for the money or for whatever his wife needs, even if he’s morally opposed to her wishes.

Biedel also appeared in “The Midnight Club” and “Midnight Mass.”

Kyliegh Curran as Lenore

Kyliegh Curran stars as Lenore, the daughter of Frederick and Morelle, and Roderick’s only grandchild. Roderick calls her the “best” of the Ushers, which tracks because she’s usually the only member of this privileged leaning towards ethically sound decisions. She’s an empathetic character which is quite the rarity in this family.

Curran previously played Abra Stone in Flanagan’s “Doctor Sleep.”

Katie Parker as Annabel Lee

Katie Parker stars as Annabel Lee, Roderick’s first wife and the mother of Frederick and Tamerlane. Allegedly Annabel Lee was Roderick’s true love. Her tender nature made her a positive influence on Roderick, for a time, but it also blinded her to the realities of the evil inside the Usher family and her spouse.

Parker has also appeared in “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Midnight Club,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Doctor Sleep.”

Michael Trucco as Rufus Wilmot Griswold

Michael Trucco plays Rufus Wilmot Griswold, who was the head of Fortunato, and Roderick’s boss, before Roderick Usher took the reins. Rufus is known as a charming but utterly ruthless and self-serving man.

Trucco appeared Flanagan’s film “Hush,” as well as “Midnight Mass” and “The Midnight Club.”

Willa Fitzgerald as Young Madeline

Annabeth Gish as Eliza

Annabeth Gish stars as Eliza, Roderick’s mother. Eliza was also the personal secretary to Fortunato Pharmaceuticals CEO William Longfellow, who is also Roderick’s father. Longfellow never recognized his relationship with Eliza, leaving Roderick and his sister Madeline out of his mind and will. To top things off the ultra religious Eliza would’t let her kids anywhere near their father’s compound. Which only made it more maniacal when Roderick becomes the boss of Fortunato.

Gish has also starred in “Midnight Mass” and “The Haunting of Hill House.”
