Fall Out Boy lit it up, up, up at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.

The alt rockers took the stage Tuesday night at the annual award show for a rousing rendition of their song "We Didn't Start the Fire," which updates the Billy Joel classic of the same name with contemporary references.

The pop-punk band appropriately engulfed the MTV stage in pyrotechnics to play the song off their 2023 album So Much (for) Stardust. Each member of the pop-punk band —Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Andy Hurley and Joe Trohman — gave an explosive performance, with every musician ripping through the fast-paced rock track and Stump, 39, spewing off the reference-heavy lyrics.

The pop culture nods didn't stop with the song's lyrics either: The "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" hitmakers wore blazers resembling David Byrne of The Talking Heads' iconic, oversized suit that appears in the concert documentary Stop Making Sense.

Their performance marked their first at the VMAs since 2007.

The alternative favorites were introduced by Bebe Rexha, giving a sweet nod to the long-running relationship between the two acts. Between 2010 and 2012, the pop singer, 34, was in an electro-pop group with Wentz, 44, called Black Cards.
