Facing the world’s best, Capital High School pole vaulter Hana Moll comes out on top
Hana Moll is officially one of the world’s best. And in her age group, the best.
The 17-year-old pole vaulter from Capital High School in Olympia won a gold medal on Thursday at the World Athletics U20 Championships Cali 22, an international competition in Santiago de Cali, Colombia. It features some of the world’s best track and field athletes.
Representing the United States, Moll cleared 4.35 meters on her third attempt to capture her first international medal. She beat Germany’s Chiara Sistermann and Janna Sophie Ohrt, who claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Moll’s twin sister Amanda finished fifth with a 4.20m clearance.
“It feels great. It was a good competition, I had a great time against everyone that was there. It was much better weather than the day prior,” Hana Moll told the World Athletics site. “I was building confidence in my vault my very first attempts. It was really tough and definitely challenged me. I’m really proud of what we both (she and Amanda) have accomplished this year.”
Moll won a state title in the pole vault at the Class 3A state track and field tournament at Mount Tahoma High School in May, eclipsing the meet record in the process.
