Social media giant Facebook has unveiled a new logo with the goal of distinguishing Facebook the company from Facebook the app.

People haven’t taken kindly to the new logo, with top tech sites describing it as ‘generic’ and others suggesting that it will take more to get rid of Facebook’s bad publicity.

The social media firm said it would start using the new brand within its products and marketing materials.

It’s part of a broader move which includes using “from Facebook” within its apps, such as Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Facebook said it would update the Facebook for Business website over the coming weeks.

Antonio Lucio, chief marketing officer, said: “Facebook started as a single app. Now, 15 years later, we offer a suite of products that help people connect to their friends and family, find communities and grow businesses.

“Today, we’re updating our company branding to be clearer about the products that come from Facebook. We’re introducing a new company logo and further distinguishing the Facebook company from the Facebook app, which will keep its own branding.”

Facebook claims that the new logo was designed ‘for clarity’.

Others weren’t so convinced.
