Facebook Hiring 500 More Employees To London HQ
Facebook plans to hire an extra 500 employees in the UK when it opens its new London headquarters next year, seeing the social media company’s British workforce increase by half.
The company will employ 1,500 people in London next year, including engineers, marketers, project managers and sales staff, when it opens its new office in Fitzrovia, close to the capital’s West End.
Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook’s vice-president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, announced the expansion at the Confederation of British Industry conference on Monday. She said: “The UK remains one of the best places to be a tech company and is an important part of Facebook’s story. We came to London in 2007 with just a handful of people. By the end of the next year we will have opened a new HQ and plan to employ 1,500 people.”
She added that many of the new roles would be “high-skilled engineering jobs as the UK is home to the largest engineering base outside of the U.S.”
The vote of confidence from the technology giant will be a welcome one in the wake of the UK’s decision to exit the European Union in June, which has since led many to speculate that a raft of international companies would look to relocate their business in the aftermath of Brexit.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Facebook’s decision to expand in London is further evidence that London’s strength as a tech hub keeps on growing. The capital’s vibrant tech scene is the envy of Europe and Facebook’s continuing commitment is another sign that London is open to talent, innovation and entrepreneurship from all four corners of the world.”
