Ezra Furman Sends Off ‘Sex Education’ With Three Moving New Songs

Ezra Furman sings about sex and love on three newly released songs that accompany the newly released fourth and final season of Sex Education. The singer-songwriter dropped “You Like Me,” “Tether,” and “Honeycomb” on Thursday as an EP titled Sex Education — Songs From Season 4.
The songs all play off themes in the show, which is about high schoolers becoming sex therapists for their fellow students. On the gentle, softly rocking “You Like Me,” she sings, “You like me and it freaks me out/Sometimes I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Another line goes, “I think we’re moving a bit too fast/It’s bringing up memories from my sexual past.” “Tether,” a piano ballad, finds her singing about wanting to run away from a relationship but ultimately returning. And on the last new song, the upbeat, pop-rock tune “Honeycomb,” she begs for a lover to find her and come home. “Please come home, Honeycomb,” she sings.

“What a songwriter craves is an outlet for her songs,” Furman said in a statement. “Somewhere to put them, something to do with her passion for arranging words into melody and maximizing their impact. And, of course, an audience. In this regard, the job of writing and recording music for Sex Education was all that I craved and more. Here was a whole world of empathetic characters and a compelling plot that had space for my voice and my band’s music to punctuate it. I have loved the task of making music for this brightly colored landscape and its tales of teenagers finding their way to better and healthier sex lives.
“Being asked to write songs that match the tone of the show, I was surprised by how deeply I engaged with the characters’ emotions,” she continued. “Effective music has to come from an emotional place, and at first I wasn’t sure I could do it. It is a testament to the show’s writing, acting and direction that it wasn’t hard at all for me to connect to the characters’ inner lives. They awakened genuine feelings about my own life, and allowed me to create with sincerity and heart.”
The season also includes music from Furman’s most recent album, last year’s All of Us Flames. Her music has been featured on each season of the show.
