The 66-year-old was walking through Kips Bay last week when the assailant walked up and "struck the 'Boardwalk Empire' star in a broad-daylight attack," law enforcement confirmed with The New York Post.

Buscemi suffered swelling to his face and left eye. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment while the attacker fled the scene and remains at large. An investigation is underway.

According to his publicist, who spoke to PEOPLE Magazine, Buscemi was “another victim of a random act of violence in the city" as he was “assaulted in midtown Manhattan" last week.

The actor is doing "okay" and “appreciates everyone’s well wishes." He added that he is “incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of NY.”

This incident follows another attack in Manhattan, which occurred roughly a month ago, where actor Michael Stuhlbarg, Buscemi's co-star from 'Boardwalk Empire,' was struck with a rock.

Following the attack, a bystander spoke out, detailing what they saw.

“I saw he was with a woman, and then through the corner of the window, I saw him trip and fall backward,” a worker who was in the area at the time of the assault told The Post. “He right away got up and ran in the opposite direction. I didn’t see who hit him.

Cops said the attack occurred around 11:48 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, in front of 369 Third Ave. According to the NYPD, the alleged attacker has been identified as a bearded man wearing a baseball cap, a blue T-shirt and black sweatpants.

Last year, Z100 radio personality Elvis Duran was attacked when walking the streets of New York City.

“Her fist comes toward my face, and it’s holding, like, a sharp object, and she tries to cut my face,” he told listeners at the time of the attack. “I put my arm up, and I stopped her from doing it, and she did it to the woman behind her. We were all shocked."

He said the attack happened “so fast,” and the assailant “was gone as fast as she appeared.”

“She almost cut me. It is crazy!” he added. “I hope no one else got hurt.”

Additionally, former New York state Senate candidate Maria Danzilo said she was the victim of a random attack while walking her dog in Central Park last year.

At the time, Danzilo told The New York Post she was walking in Central Park while talking to a friend on the phone when she noticed a stranger approaching her. As he got closer, he lunged at her.

“I must have raised my left arm, because he hit my arm, not my face,” Danzilo told the outlet. “I think he was aiming for my face. But I dropped the phone and yelled at him, something like, ‘How dare you hit me!'”

After the assault, the man quickly fled the scene as she and other eye-witnesses called 911. She was quick on her feet and could snap a photo of the assailant. “He had a vacant look in his eyes,” Danzilo recalled. “He looked dangerous to me, like he was going to hit other people.”

After bringing her dog home, she met up with the New York Police Department, who “were very helpful, concerned and responsive,” she said.

“Our once safe park & neighborhood has become terrifying,” she later wrote in a social media post. “Walking my dog in middle of day should not be filled with risk like this! I call on @NYCMayor to put his money where his mouth is and live up to his promise of delivering real public safety.”
