"Extreme Makeover" is getting an extreme makeover − and there's a casting call for the newest version of the home improvement show.

Here's a look back and evolution of the beloved reality TV show and information about the nationwide casting call.

What is 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?'

In the early 2000s when reality TV shows were gaining steam (and viewership), ABC pitched a docuseries about home improvement and home renovation with a surprise reveal for the lucky family. That series, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," was hosted by HGTV star Ty Pennington. It aired on ABC from 2004 to 2012. It was a spin-off of "Extreme Makeover," a reality show that focused on people rather than their homes. "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," also referred to as "Extreme Home Makeover," was a reality TV success.

A version was rebooted by HGTV in 2020 and hosted by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family," "Ugly Betty"). This "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" reboot included 10 episodes with some very special guests − actor Anthony Anderson ("Blackish"), Food Network star Tyler Florence, Leann Rimes, Derek Hough from "Dancing with the Stars" and HGTV star Tarek El Moussa were featured in the series, too.

In June 2023, ABC announced "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" would be revived and, ahem, made over. The revival features Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin of the wildly popular celebrity makeover Netflix series, "The Home Edit." Shearer and Teplin, already social media rock stars with a "Home Edit" Instagram following of 6.7 million followers, worked with Reese Witherspoon, Jordana Brewster ("Fast and Furious" films), Gwyneth Paltrow, Katy Perry and Khloe Kardashian, to name a few. New episodes of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" airs in 2023 and 2024.

Part of the charm of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" lies with the hosts, Clea and Joanna. But make no mistake, it's the families and their stories that hook viewers. It's no different for the 2023 reboot.

'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' and it's HGTV roots

  • What kind of design style do you like/admire? (e.g. farmhouse, contemporary, traditional, mid century modern, shabby-chic, etc.)

  • Please describe what comes to mind when you imagine your family’s dream home (and why?)

And because "The Home Edit" hosts, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin are involved − the pair gained international fame with their wildly popular Netflix series "The Home Edit" where they help celebrity clients organize their homes, office, garage or in one case, Reese Witherspoon's closet − there are questions about home organization in the casting call application.

  • Are there areas in your home that are overstuffed, cluttered, and in need of some organization?

  • How would the organization of this space benefit your family?
