We’ve heard some crazy things about Hollywood, but this may be one of the strangest, and most jarring we’ve heard of in some time.

One of the most prolific extras in the film industry, Jill Goldston, recently told her story to the Guardian, talking about the documentary about her record-breaking work called Jill, Uncredited. She talked about being a background artist in films such as The Italian Job, The Virgin Soldiers (where she met David Bowie when he was extra, and a decade later, even remembered her on the set of one of his films), and more. One of these films she’s been in also includes a Tom Cruise film, where she recalled the rather outrageous request his people asked of the extras.

“Extras are the lowest and you don’t ever speak to a star unless they speak to you,” Goldston recounted. “We’ve been told: ‘Tom Cruise is about to come on set. Please do not make eye contact.’”

It’s unclear what film of Cruise’s this was on, but hearing a request like this is rather jarring.

Now, this isn’t the first time Cruise and his team has been accused of doing this. In fact, this rumor became so rampant that he was confronted with it. Director Chris McQuarrie previously told The Sunday Times, per Yahoo, asked about the “weirdest” rumor Cruise has ever heard about himself, and laughed, recalling the “myth” that people “were not allowed to look me in the eye.”

Along with Cruise, many actors have been accused of having extras abide by this rule in the past, such as Sandra Bullock, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mike Myers, and more, per the same Yahoo piece.
