Nearly nine years after he wrapped Two and a Half Men, Jon Cryer returns to the world of situational comedy in NBC’s Extended Family.

The network released a quasi-trailer Tuesday, which features the first footage from the Mike O’Malley-created multi-cam. The series centers on former marrieds Jim (Cryer) and Julia (TimelessAbigail Spencer), who, after an amicable divorce, “decide to continue to raise their kids at the family home while taking turns on who gets to stay with them,” according to the official logline. “Navigating the waters of divorce and child-sharing gets more complicated for Jim when the owner of his favorite sports team (ScrubsDonald Faison) enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart.”

Cryer, of course, is best known to TV audiences for his turn as the stingy Alan Harper on CBS’ Two and a Half Men — a role that earned him a pair of Emmys over the course of its 12-season run. Following its 2015 series finale, Cryer booked a recurring role as Lex Luthor on the CBS-turned-CW drama Supergirl, which wrapped in November 2021. (For his thoughts on the big screen’s new Lex, go here.)

He also appeared in multiple episodes of CBS’ NCIS (as Dr. Cyril Taft) and Netflix’s The Ranch (as local banker Bill, a gig that reunited him with fellow Two and a Half Men grad Ashton Kutcher).

Extended Family premieres on Saturday, Dec. 23 at 8/7c, immediately following NBC’s coverage of the highly contested NFL matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. It will then follow Season 2 of Night Court, airing Tuesdays at 8:30 pm, beginning Jan. 2.
