Explosive fun: Check out this guide to family-friendly July 4th events in the Athens area

Though Independence Day falls on a Tuesday this year, you can bet on hearing the screech of bottle rockets and the rapid pop of firecrackers for the next several days as July 4th celebrations commence in neighborhoods and parks across the United States.

For those who are interested in food, family and fireworks in a more formal and controlled setting, the Banner-Herald has put together a list of five places in the Athens area where official Independence Day events are being held.

Temperatures are expected to soar into the upper 90s through the weekend, with 50% chance of rain called for on Sunday and Monday and 60% on Tuesday.

Summer in the City Music & Fireworks

WHEN: Friday, June 30 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

WHERE: Spencer Park (1577-1637 S. Broad St. in Commerce)

DETAILS: The festivities in downtown Commerce are set to include an outdoor screening of the 1975 movie "Jaws," food vendors, live music by Back in Time Band and a fireworks show after dusk.

Nicholson Independence Celebration

WHEN: Saturday, July 1 at 3 p.m.

WHERE: East Jackson Park (225 Lakeview Dr. in Nicholson)

DETAILS: Nicholson's July 4th celebration will feature food and craft vendors, family attractions such as inflatables, a train ride and a mechanical bull, live music by Whiskey Rose Band and an evening fireworks display.

Star-Spangled Classic

WHEN: Saturday, July 1 at 7 p.m.

WHERE: Athens Ben Epps Airport (1010 Ben Epps Dr., Athens)

DETAILS: Athens' annual fireworks show will start around 9:30 p.m. and will be viewable from several locations around the Lexington Road, Cherokee Road and Gaines School Road intersection. Limited parking near the airport will open at 7 p.m. Guest are reminded that pets, alcohol, fireworks, grills, and smoking are not allowed.

Bill of Rights Reading

WHEN: Tuesday, July 4 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

WHERE: Hendershot's Coffee (237 Prince Ave. in Athens)

DETAILS: Athens-based Indivisible GA 10 will recite a live reading of the The United States Bill of Rights, which comprises the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. The nonpartisan event is free and open to the public and will take place on the outdoor patio at Hendershot's.

Independence Day Celebration and Parade

WHEN: Tuesday, July 4 at 9 a.m.

WHERE: City Hall (60 W. First Avenue in Colbert)
