Exploring the Framework with ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Alternate realities are a daily occurrence on the DC shows over on The CW, but ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is finally ready to embrace its own version of What If…? with this season’s final story arc about the Framework. Dr. Radcliffe’s (John Hannah) attempt to win back the love of his life has resulted in the construction of a massive, Matrix-like digital reality, and now the entire team is trapped inside.

The Framework is a perfect recreation of the world, only everybody hurts a little less. In the interview above, Henry Simmons explains the concept as just like your life, but you get to fix your one big regret. Which sounds great, but Simmons sounds ambivalent: Does that mean that Mack and Yo-Yo aren’t together in this reality? Or maybe it’s something to do with his daughter?

Executive producer Jeffrey Bell and Mallory Jansen, who plays the helpful/homicidal robot Aida, can’t/won’t spill the beans on how Daisy and Jemma (Chloe Bennett, Elizabeth Henstridge) — who dove into the Framework to rescue their teammates — will even find their teammates, much less how they’ll get them out. Bell says they might not even remember the real world. And we saw Jemma’s gravestone at the end of last episode, so how does that even work? “There’s a lot of story to unpack,” is Bell’s cagey reply. Hopefully, a lot of questions get answered when S.H.I.E.L.D. returns tonight.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
