Experts slugfest: ‘Succession’ stomps, ‘Abbott Elementary’ falters and more snubs and surprises

The Golden Globes told other shows to “f— off” because “Succession” dominated with a leading nine nominations. With its nine bids, “Succession” broke the record shared by “The Thorn Birds” (1984) and “L.A Law” (1990) for the most Golden Globe nominations by a show in a single year. The HBO hit, which earned 27 Emmy bids for its fourth and final season, was nominated in every category in which it was eligible, most notably getting in all three of its lead actors — Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong — into the Best TV Drama Actor category, just like it did at the Emmys. Can anything stop it from snagging its record-tying third Best Drama Series Globe win?

Over in comedy, “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” each scored five nominations, the second most in the TV field, Meanwhile, “Abbott Elementary” took a hit. It won three awards last season but this time only managed two nominations, both categories in which it’s the reigning champ, Best Comedy/Musical Series and Best TV Comedy/Musical Actress for Quinta Brunson. But the expanded pool of Globes voters shunned Tyler James Williams, who won the comedy/drama supporting actor award last year and both supporting ladies, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James, both of whom were nominated last year. The TV supporting categories were re-combined into catch-all fields again and surely the strike-induced delay of “Abbott’s” third season did not help.
