Exhibits, self-guided tours, and historic films: What's happening at Heritage State Park

FALL RIVER — There's a whole lot happening in January at Heritage State Park.

From StoryWalks, to films, exhibits, self-guided tours and more, there is plenty to interest.

All programs are free and open to the public, and the Visitor Center is located at 100 Davol St., in the Captain Thomas J. Hudner Jr. Memorial Building.

Free parking is available in the Department of Conservation and Recreation parking lot at 5 Water St.

An adult must accompany children. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request.

Here's what's happening at Heritage State Park in January:

Visitor Center: Exhibit, films, and community gallery

Open daily, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Explore Heritage State Park's permanent exhibit celebrating the cultural, ethnic, and industrial history of Fall River. Films and temporary exhibitions highlight stories of the city and community.

StoryWalk: 'Get Up, Stand Up'

Daily, dawn to dusk, Robert Correia Boardwalk

"Get Up, Stand Up" is an inspirational book based on the Bob Marley song, adapted by his daughter Cedella. It is installed adjacent to the Picnic Grove named in honor of David Almond.

StoryWalk: 'Quequechan: Forgotten River'

Daily, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Visitor Center

"Quequechan: Forgotten River" is a book by Fall River native Jeanne L. Prevost, illustrated by Linda Crockett.

Film: 'The Fabric of Fall River'

Fridays through Tuesdays, on demand, Visitor Center Theater

Explore Fall River's rich past. For ages 8 and up; runtime is approximately 30 minutes.

Film: 'Steamboats — The Fall River Line'

Fridays through Tuesdays, on demand, Visitor Center Theater

Climb aboard and explore Fall River's steamboat line and visit a bygone age of travel. Runtime: 57 minutes.

Exhibit: 'Two Colonies — Plimoth and Massachusetts Bay'

Daily until Feb. 1, Visitor Center lobby

This is a tale of two colonies: Plimoth and the larger Massachusetts Bay Colony, founded by English Puritans. On loan from the Commonwealth Museum and the Secretary of State.

Exhibit: 'Faces of Fall River'

Daily, Visitor Center lobby

Who are the people who call this place home? Explore a selection of historic Fall River photographs. This exhibit features the work of Lewis Hine, whose photographs of children in Fall River cotton mills helped galvanize the nation against child labor.

Self-guided tour: 'Water + Granite + Gravity = Fall River'

Daily, Visitor Center lobby for information

Meander through the park on this journey through history. This 30-minute, self-guided walk connects the park's wayfinders. Information is available at the front desk.

Self-guided tour: 'People, Ambition, and Hard Work'

Daily, Visitor Center lobby for information

A Portuguese-American poet, a beloved local entrepreneur, a decorated military hero, and a visionary state legislator all have their names enshrined in Heritage State Park. This is a short, self-guided walking tour of the landmarks named for these pioneers. Information is available at the front desk.

Creation Station Activities

Daily, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Visitor Center lobby

Stop by the Visitor Center and grab one of their unique coloring sheets of moments in Fall River history. Learn about textiles and calico, help complete their calico stamp wall, or even weave a row on the community loom. If you complete an entire row, you too can add your name to the tapestry! This is a drop-in program, for all ages.
