PORTSMOUTH — The “Lost Neighborhoods” art exhibition at Portsmouth Historical Society on exhibit now through Dec. 31 is an inspiring celebration of Portsmouth's past, in particular the ethnic small communities, the North End and South End,  which helped to make this seacoast city what it is now.

Tom Glover, Barbara Adams, Peter Cady and Dustan Knight, four abstract painters, have delved deeper into the meaning of community during the early twentieth century in their paintings, inspired by the Athenaeum’s extensive photo archive and first person narratives of Portsmouth. Their abstract styles capture the feelings and nuances of what these long-gone neighborhoods really were. The story behind “Lost Neighborhoods” is not just the lost real estate, but the dislocation of tight-knit communities and families.

The Portsmouth Historical Society is open seven days a week, and there will be a “Chat with the Artists” on Friday, Dec. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Shurtleff lives in Strafford on the shores of Bow Lake.  She began her journey with photography in earnest in 2015 when she received her first DSLR camera, and took several classes as well as workshops, increasing her knowledge and love of photography.  “The workshops introduced me to more than just photographing landscapes, wildlife and flowers,” she said. “I have found that I really love photographing new things and pushing myself out of my comfort zone to become a better photographer.  Additionally, photography is my way to relax, forget all that life throws at you and just enjoy myself.”

Brown is a self taught photographer who took up the craft while living in Montana during the early ‘80s. After retiring is 2011, he started a new venture as a landscape photographer.  “I enjoy photographing covered bridges, light houses, old barns, churches, and wildlife, or just about anything else I happen to find along the way.”
