KITTERY, Maine – Haley Art Gallery will host a talk on Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at 1 p.m., by artist Carlos Vega on Hagiography & Popular Religion: A Personal Journey.

Vega, a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Wellesley College, will discuss how his academic focus on literature, culture, and hagiography (the study of the lives of saints), led him to his passion for hagiographic motifs in an American/Hispanic context. The talk is free and open to the public.

Vega will examine the role of religious cultural icons and symbols (products of both European Catholic and Native American traditions), in a political and aesthetic agenda and how he integrates these motifs in his artistic mixed-media mirror artwork as part of the gallery’s current exhibit In Art We Trustwhich will remain on view through Nov. 18.

PORTSMOUTH — Strawbery Banke Museum recently announced its collaboration with three accomplished local artists— Alastair Dacey, Dustan Knight, and Tom Hughes—for the "Artists at the Banke" exhibition, bringing to life the Puddle Dock neighborhood through art. Visitors are welcome to view the finished works in the Lawrence J. Yerdon Visitors Center Lecture Hall through Oct. 25 free of charge. All artwork is available for purchase, subject to availability, and proceeds from the sale equally benefit Strawbery Banke Museum and the artists.

During the late summer and early fall, the artists immersed themselves in the historic neighborhood, capturing its nature through their creative vision and the lens of 2023.

“Art transports viewers through time, offering unique perspectives into history, culture, and everyday life,” said Linnea Grim, President and CEO, Thomas W. Haas Endowed Chair. “The Artists at the Banke exhibition was a wonderful opportunity to foster a deeper connection between visitors and the rich heritage of the Puddle Dock neighborhood.”

The culmination of their efforts is on display at the Lawrence J. Yerdon Visitors Center Lecture Hall, providing the public an opportunity to admire the artwork daily when the Museum is open to the public. Strawbery Banke is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit StrawberyBanke.org/artists-at-the-banke.
