Dave Terry, the father, is a painter, art restorer, auctioneer and musician. Dane Terry, the son, is also a painter as well as a musician, composer, playwright, podcaster or as he puts it, “everything but a dancer.”

The duo — dad is a lifelong resident of Columbus and son is a Columbus native who lives in Brooklyn, New York — are showing their paintings together in an exhibit for the first time. “Night and Day: A Suite of Works by Dane Terry ad Dave Terry” continues through March 15 at the Ohio State University Faculty Club.

The 42 works are mostly landscapes. Dave Terry works in oil while Dane Terry works in oil pastel.

Dave, 64, loves working as a plein-air painter, finding inspiration in the landscapes of Ohio, Indiana, Colorado and Maine. His “Bottomland DePauw, IN” is a lovely impressionist scene of a grove of lush trees. (“I’m a tree freak,” he says.) Additional landscapes including “Lucky Day,” “Low-Lying Fog” and “After a Rain” capture the serenity and muted colors of pastoral scenes.

Dane, 40, is particularly adept at night scenes such as “Dark Park,” “Driving into Columbus” and “Parked Car,” often with rain-splashed streets and focal points of car lights. His “Ellis Island Janitor” shows a janitor at work at the famous New York site, with patterns on the floor serving as captivating texture.

All of the works are recent, mostly painted by father and son in 2023.

Both are self-taught artists. Dave Terry is well-known in Columbus as an art restorer and former gallery owner. Dane Terry graduated from Ohio State University and went on to make his way with music and storytelling projects. Dane often played piano for art exhibit openings in venues including the Sharon Weiss Gallery and Art Access.

Not playing the piano for an art opening and exhibiting his own works is new to Dane.

“This is the first show of my paintings other than in the back of a bar in Brooklyn,” he said.

Dave Terry has also worked in sculpture and monotypes but says oil landscapes are his first love.

The paintings of father and son cohabit well together in the Faculty Club that offers regular exhibits of works by artists with connections to Ohio State.

The Terrys said they had fun but felt a little pressure in getting together enough paintings for a father-son show.

“I was joking with my dad," Dane Terry said, "that we should call it ‘Nepotism: The Show.’”
