Exclusive Trailer: Hilary Swank Is Noble in 'The Homesman'

Mary Bee Cuddy “is as fine a woman who’s ever walked.” Why? Because Tommy Lee Jones says so!

Jones stars in and directs The Homesman — which casts Hilary Swank at center stage as fine woman Cuddy. In the trailer, seen here first on Yahoo Movies, she happens upon claim-jumper George Briggs (Jones) as his life literally hangs in the balance, and enlists his help to transport three mentally ill women whose “husbands can’t care for them properly.” It’s a risky endeavor, one that Briggs dreads more than his own demise: “Three crazy women for five weeks is a lot more than I bargained for.”

Advance word has called The Homesman a quasi-feminist tale that reverses the well-established genre’s typical story arc. The trailer reflects that, showing her as a tough as nails, rugged-as-anything woman of the prairie.

The Homesman, opens on Nov. 14. Initially screened at Cannes last spring, it is littered with supporting roles and cameos from the likes of Hailee Steinfeld, Meryl Streep, James Spader, John Lithgow, Tim Blake Nelson, William Fichtner, and Jesse Plemons. (Streep’s daughter, Grace Gummer, also appears.)
