If you're a parent, chances are you have a copy of Harold and the Purple Crayon in your child's library. You may have read it once, twice, or even a hundred times. Your chance to see the adventure and imagination come to life on the big screen is getting closer. A film version of the beloved book will be in theaters in August.

But we are giving you an exclusive early look at the movie with the newest trailer and movie poster for Harold and the Purple Crayon.

What is 'Harold and the Purple Crayon' About?

Harold (Zachary Levi) can make anything come to life inside his book just by drawing it. "As he got bigger, so did his imagination," the trailer begins.

So when Harold grows up, he draws himself right off of the book's pages. That's when we see Harold take a leap of faith into the real world. But his friends Moose and Porcupine can't let him go alone, so they follow after him. And Harold soon finds out he has a lot to learn.

Harold's ability to use his crayon to make anything come to life still works in the real world. He uses his purple crayon to draw himself a bicycle before crashing it, turning his Converse sneakers into roller skates, creating butterflies, and drawing an airplane that can actually fly.

"Do you know what brought you to life? It's what your crayon is made of. The most powerful, extraordinary stuff on earth," says the character Gary (Jemaine Clement) in the trailer.

"Wax," Harold answers.

"Pure imagination," Gary chimes in.

But the power of imagination falls into the wrong hands. Now it's up to Harold and his friends to use their creativity to save the real world, as well as his home.

Bringing the Beloved Book to Life

This is the first time the book has been adapted into a movie. Harold and the Purple Crayon was first published in 1955 and was written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson. It has continuously been in print since then. A representative from Harper Collins tells Parents the original book has sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide, including Spanish editions.

Harold and his adventures of the imagination became so popular that Johnson went on to write several books starring Harold. In the books, Harold goes on a treasure hunt, creates a fairy tale, visits the North Pole, and travels to the sky and the circus. He even learns his ABCs and creates a picture for his own room. If you include these books, the series has sold nearly 10 million copies.

Now we get to learn all about Harold's newest adventures on film. Harold and the Purple Crayon hits theaters on August 2. But parents, the movie is rated PG, so there may be some scenes of action and adventure that your little one may find a bit scary at times.
