Need a break from Black Friday madness? You're in luck!
In next week's episode of Empire, titled "What We May Be," Jussie Smollett performs a catchy new track about Lyon matriarch, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), and ET has the exclusive premiere of the upbeat, pop-infused tune, "Mama."
Though things haven't always been the greatest between Smollett's character, middle Lyon son Jamal, and his mother, blood is always thicker than water, as the song's lyrics suggest.
This season, Jamal's been on a rocky road back to the spotlight, as he continues to take baby steps toward returning to the stage after taking a bullet for his father, Lucious (Terrence Howard).
Empire executive producer Sanaa Hamri spoke to ET in October about utilizing superstar Mariah Carey, who played A-list songstress Kitty, as a catalyst to move Jamal in a positive direction musically.
"Kitty is one of Jamal's favorite artists and Cookie is trying to get him out of, in her head, a little rut. When he sees the surprise of Kitty, we can see that he's still not comfortable [performing], that his PTSD is serious," Hamri said at the time. "Then he comes up with the idea about recording a song [with Kitty] and [he's in] a recording studio, so it's a comfortable, familiar environment and it's almost like he's taking baby steps towards it."
Empire returns Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
