ComingSoon is debuting an exclusive clip from The Herricanes, a documentary following the story of female athletes who try to defy the odds.

The Herricanes comes from director/producer Olivia Kuan (I Blame Society, First Period), and producer Lisa France (Roll With Me, Queen Sugar). The documentary features a conversation about the state of women’s sports as a whole and focuses on a women’s full tackle football league that has been going strong since the 70’s.

The film is set to be part of this year’s Slamdance Film Festival and has already racked up several awards at past festivals, including the Audience Award for Documentary Spotlight Program at SXSW 2023.

What is The Herricanes about?

“The Houston Herricanes were a part of the first women’s full tackle football league in the 1970s,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Their unknown story is one of commitment, courage, and strength. Despite adversity and hardship, they fielded a team purely for the love of the game. What they started is a movement that is still in motion today.”

The Herricanes will be available online on the Slamdance Channel as part of the Slamdance Film Festival from January 22-28, 2024. A wider release is unknown as of yet.
