Euphoria star Colman Domingo has dropped some hints about the Christmas special ahead of its UK premiere on Monday (December 7).

The episode, which is out now on HBO Max in the US, bridges the gap between the first two seasons, as Rue (Zendaya) tries to sort through her relationship woes with help from Ali (Domingo) — the older man who has mentored her at Narcotics Anonymous.

When Digital Spy recently chatted to Colman Domingo — who also plays Strand in Fear the Walking Dead — he indicated that the festive instalment swings its tone fairly sharply at times.

"We're spending this day of Christmas, and… It's even more troubling with two people who have had addiction issues, so the idea is that you can actually be with these addicts, and see what’s going on with them, and how they make it through a holiday, which I think is really interesting," he told us.

"I think it's going to surprise audiences. I think that [showrunner] Sam [Levinson] is very interested in keeping the audience guessing, whether it's structurally or whether it’s emotionally.

"I think that he's always game to pull the rug out from underneath his audiences, so I think it's going to be challenging. It's going to be witty. It's going to be funny. And it's going to have a lot of heart."

While the actor predicted some surprises for viewers, he doesn't concern himself with how they actually receive the episodes.

"I'm never concerned with the way that audiences respond. All I know is that what we've created, I think is special," he noted. "And I think that they’ve already been on board for Rue's journey. Zendaya's work is so incredible and so heartfelt and complex that I think they will be on board for more of her, and also Rue's relationship with Ali. I think we're going to give them a little more context.

"I think there'll be much to smile about. There'll be Christmas cheer. I think it will feel like… I think the episode feels like my favourite Christmas song, which is 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'. It’s a bittersweet, warm Christmas, but it's really about Christmas with two addicts, and – I don't know – looking for Christmas cheer [laughs]. That's all I'll say. We're looking for Christmas cheer in the episode."

Domingo also shared an extra special Christmas treat for UK viewers, urging them to look for a familiar face.

"There's a wonderful guest star that we may have seen in the last season, who has a lovely moment in it as well," he said. "But I think it's going to really bring a lot of these things together because it just picks up, basically, where we left off in season one. It's a wonderful moment."
