Ex-‘Scream’ star Melissa Barrera tears up over firing and reveals Jenna Ortega’s reaction: ‘It’s just bad’

She’s done screaming into the void.

Melissa Barrera was fired from the rebooted “Scream” franchise months ago, but the fallout is still difficult to process for her.

“It’s definitely hard, because I was just in such a cloudy state of mind, but I was very fortunate,” Barrera, 33, told the Hollywood Reporter through tears in an interview published on Thursday. “I had a lot of support from the people around me: my team and specifically my publicists — they just carried me.”

The actress was let go after posting pro-Palestine sentiments on her Instagram after Hamas’ unprovoked attack on Oct. 7.

“None of this makes me happy,” Barrera added. “It was just all sad because I really, deeply care about the franchise. It’s just bad that it had to happen like that.”

“Scream” co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin praised the star’s resilience to the outlet.

“Melissa is incredibly strong,” Bettinelli-Olpin, 46, said. “You see it in her performances. When you’re friends with her, you feel it in just being with her.”

Bettinelli-Olpin directed the Mexican native in 2022’s “Scream,” 2023’s “Scream VI” and this year’s “Abigail.”

The actress was let go from the rebooted slasher franchise after Spyglass Media said that her Instagram activity had “been perceived as anti-Semitic.”

“I too come from a colonized country,” the “In The Heights” star posted in a now-deleted Instagram Story along with a Mexican flag shortly after the attacks.

“Palestine WILL be free,” she added. “They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds.”

In another post, she wrote: “At the end of the day, I’d rather be excluded for who I include, than be included for who I exclude.”

“Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water. People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.”

Shortly after the “Keep Breathing” star’s departure, both Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon left the film and production was halted.

“We chatted for a while, and I love her so much. She’s been very supportive of me, and we’re sisters for life,” she said of Ortega, 21. “We’ll plan little reunions to play board games because that’s what we used to do when we were shooting.”

Despite the scandal, the “Carmen” actress still remains active on social media and makes a point to back those who are being slammed online.

“Now when I see someone going through something like that, I’m constantly checking in, because I know what it feels like,” she told THR.

When asked by the outlet if she had any plans to return to “Scream” — much like her co-star Neve Campbell, who recently rejoined the franchise after a pay dispute — Barerra hasn’t ruled anything out.

“I’ve learned to never say never, but also a lot of things would have to happen for Sam to come back,” she said. “For now, next page, next chapter, and then we’ll see what the future holds.”
