Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead's son 'freaked out' meeting Baby Yoda: 'He did not like it'

The poor kid was "screaming his head off," McGregor recalled.

As one might expect for the child of two Star Wars actors, Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead's young son, Laurie, has grown up surrounded by merch from a galaxy far, far away. But when he got the chance to meet the real Grogu, a.k.a. Baby Yoda, things didn't go quite as planned.

On Monday's episode of The Tonight Show, the couple recalled the time Laurie visited his mom on the set of Ahsoka and was introduced to his favorite character — only to promptly burst into tears.

"There was a big build-up to it, because he's got several Grogu stuffed animals that he loves, I mean, since he was born to now," Winstead explained. "He loves them. He wants to take them everywhere."

Which is why Winstead (who plays plays the Twi'lek pilot Hera Syndulla) and McGregor (Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi) assumed that their son would be thrilled to meet the adorable puppet. "We were like, 'Laurie, you're going to meet the real Grogu!' And he was like, a year and a half at this point," she continued. "Everybody was there to make this happen to, like, bring Grogu to life in front of him… and it went really badly."

"He freaked out," McGregor deadpanned as host Jimmy Fallon burst into laughter. "He lost it. He did not like it."

Winstead confessed that it was simply "too much" and "too weird" for the boy, who "screamed the whole time."

So much so that, McGregor revealed, it startled Grogu's handlers. "The puppeteers were like, 'Oh, sorry. Sorry,'" he added. "[Laurie] was, like, screaming his head off."

Winstead previously told EW that Laurie was "obsessed" with Grogu, and certainly no stranger to Star Wars paraphernalia.

"In terms of our son's favorite toys, he's got his Grogu," she said. "He's got Lola from the Obi-Wan series. There's a lot of Dadas around from various different eras of Obi-Wan. If he sees any sort of Obi-Wan figure around, that's Dada. That's what he knows it as right now."
