Everything You Need to Remember About Seasons 1-2 of “Never Have I Ever” Before Watching Season 3

Season 3 of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever finally debuts on August 12, and TBH, we cannot wait to see what fresh drama Devi Vishwakumar has gotten herself into. Our leading lady, portrayed by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, has had quite the complicated love life throughout the first two seasons of the comedy-drama series, so it’s totally fair if you need a little refresher before watching season 3.
Similar to seasons 1 and 2, season 3 will have 10 episodes. This is the penultimate season for the show, as showrunner Mindy Kaling announced back in March that the fourth season will be the final chapter for our favorite Sherman Oak High students.
Season One
In season one, we’re introduced to Devi, a high school sophomore struggling to find herself in the wake of her father’s sudden death. She lives outside Los Angeles with her overbearing — but loving — mother Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), and older cousin, Kamala (Richa Moorjani). At the start of the new school year, Devi is determined that she and her besties, Eleanor (Ramona Young) and Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez), climb the Sherman Oaks social ladder. The first step is finding a boyfriend, so she sets her sights on the ultra-popular upperclassman Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet).
Throughout the season, Devi makes her fair share of mistakes — which leads to a “friendship breakup” between her and Eleanor and Fab, a big argument with her mother about not wanting to move to India, and an awkward up-and-down relationship with Paxton. All the while, she continues to butt heads with her frenemy, Ben (Jaren Lewison). But by the season one finale, Devi has healed her relationships with Eleanor, Fabiola, and her mother — and just as Paxton seems to realize that Devi is the one for him and calls to tell her, Devi and Ben kiss.
The finale ends on this cliffhanger, establishing the Devi-Paxton-Ben love triangle for season 2.
Season Two
In the premiere episode of the second season, Paxton apologizes to Devi for not treating her right. Torn between her feelings for Paxton and Ben, Devi creates a pro-con list with Fab and Eleanor. Thinking that she’s soon moving to India with her mother, Devi decides to date both Paxton and Ben (and no, neither of them are aware that she’s two-timing them). Of course, this is a terrible decision and both are extremely upset when they find out.
Although she’s successful in patching things up with Paxton, making amends with Ben is more difficult. When Devi grows jealous over Ben’s flirtation with the new student, Aneesa (Megan Suri), she spreads a rumor about her that actually ends up being true. After some time, Aneesa forgives Devi, and Aneesa and Ben begin to date.
Devi and Paxton begin to see each other again in secret, but he continues to treat her as a friend at school. This confuses Devi and leaves her unsure of how Paxton really feels about her. But when The Winter Ball arrives, Paxton shows up for her and says that he wants to be her boyfriend.
The two enter the school together, and the reaction from Ben seems to suggest that he is not totally over Devi after all.
Also in the season two finale, Fab and her girlfriend, Eve, win Cricket Queen and Queen. And after her breakup from Malcom, Eleanor is asked to dance by Paxton’s best friend, Trent.
After a couple dates with fellow dermatologist Dr. Jackson (Common), Nalini realizes that she’s not ready to date. Meanwhile, Kamala stands up to her misogynistic boss, Evan, in the lab. Upset that her boyfriend Prashant (Rushi Kota) encouraged her to keep quiet and not say anything about the way she was being treated, she escapes his proposal and goes to meet Manish (Utkarsh Ambudkar) — Devi’s high school English teacher — suggesting that the two like each other and could possibly start dating in season 3.
Clearly, there’s *so* much going on, and the season 3 trailer hints at even more drama for Devi and her friends. The complex love situation between Devi, Paxton, Ben, and Aneesa continues — and to make matters even more complicated, new student Des (Anirudh Pisharody) seems to be a potential new love interest for Devi. Our girl doesn’t always make the best decisions, so who knows where this might all lead.
Season 3 of Never Have I Ever debuts on Netflix on Friday, August 12 at 3:00am EST.
