May 2023: Simpson Says He 'Caught Cancer'

In a video posted to social media in May 2023, Simpson revealed that he had completed treatment for an unspecified type of cancer.

"In recent years — really recent years — I unfortunately caught cancer, and so I had to do the whole chemo thing," he explained in the four-minute clip.

Simpson said, in an effort to combat the "nausea" that came with chemo, he had started smoking marijuana.

"Even the doctor said, 'You're going to have that nausea,' they wanted to give me some pills...but I heard that pot was pretty good [for nausea.]" Simpson added.

Simpson said that he had only experienced nausea "twice" since beginning marijuana.

"I'm over the COVID stuff. I'm sorry, I mean chemo. I'm over that, I had COVID and cancer at the same time, unfortunately, but I'm over the chemo," said Simpson. "I only got nausea on two occasions, and it only lasted about two or three minutes, so I thought the pot really helped me with the unfortunate side of catching cancer."

The former athlete ended his video by saying he's "healthy now."

"It looks like I beat it. I'm happy about that," he said.

Feb. 2024: Addresses Hospice Rumors

In February, Simpson posted another video, denying reports that he had been put into hospice care.

"Hey, X world," Simpson said. "Hospice? Hospice? You talking about hospice?"

Simpson, who could be seen at the wheel of a car in the video, added with a laugh: "No, I'm not in any hospice, I don't know who put that out there."

Elsewhere in the video, which was filmed two days ahead of Super Bowl Sunday, Simpson said he was "hosting a ton of friends for the Super Bowl here in Las Vegas. All is well!"

Feb. 2024: Says 'My Health Is Good' in a Final Health Update

In his most recent update on X — the last one Simpson himself would ever post — the former football player offered an update on his health, saying in a video posted on Feb. 11, "My health is good. I mean, obviously I'm dealing with some issues."

"I think I'm just about over it and I'll be back on that golf course hopefully in a couple of weeks," Simpson said.

April 2024: Simpson's Family Announces His Death

On Thursday, Simpson's family posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), announcing that he had died on April 10 at 76 years old.

"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace," the post on Simpson's X account reads.
