Everything to Know About the Other Members of Maroon 5 Ahead of the Super Bowl Halftime Show

And they will (all) be loved!

The members of Maroon 5 are gearing up to show off their moves like Jagger as Super Bowl LIII halftime headliners when the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams go head-to-head during the big game on Sunday. As any dedicated football fan would be able to name and spit facts about each player on the respective teams, here’s your guide to doing the same with the pop-rock band headlining halftime.

Although Adam Levine receives the most face time during appearances as the frontman of the band, the six other members of Maroon 5 have remarkable talents of their own.

So really who are all seven Maroon 5 members headlining the Pepsi Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show? Here’s what to know about Levine, James Valentine, PJ Morton, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, Matt Flynn and Sam Farrar.

Adam Levine

Levine, 39, began his music career in 1994 when he formed his first rock band, Kara’s Flowers, with high school classmates (and current members) Jesse Carmichael and Mickey Madden, as well as former bandmate Ryan Dusick while attending the private Brentwood School. After going off to college and realizing music was the only career they wished to pursue, the quad reunited in Los Angeles, added James Valentine to the mix, and changed their name to Maroon 5 in 2001. Six studio albums, three Grammy Award wins and several more accolades later, Levine uses his talent to lead other hopeful musicians to their dream careers on NBC’s hit reality singing competition, The Voice.

James Valentine

The Maroon 5 guitarist, 40, kicked off his career in music as a pianist, before taking up the drums and finally settling into guitar. During their short ride at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1996, Valentine befriended classmate John Mayer, who remains a close pal to this day. After hearing their hit song “This Love,” Mayer invited Maroon 5 to be the opening act on his 2003 tour, and then again in 2004. Aside from his work with Maroon 5, Valentine contributed guitar work on songs “Stop This Train” and “In Repair” on Mayer’s Continuum album.

The more, the merrier! Valentine is also one-fifth of band JJAMZ, which stands for the first letter of each of its members’ names — the first J being for James Valentine.

Jesse Carmichael

As one of the founding members of Maroon 5, the keyboardist, 39, — who once played the guitar in Kara’s Flowers — headed off to Five Towns College (where the school’s color was maroon!) with Levine after their band’s debut (and only) album The Fourth World didn’t do as well as they had hoped. While college taught him the skill he excels at today, the keyboard, Carmichael and Levine dropped out of college and headed back to Los Angeles to give music another shot.

After taking a short career hiatus in 2012 to focus on his studies in spiritual healing, Carmichael jumped back into action two years later just in time to record Maroon 5’s fifth studio album, V.

Going by alias 1863, Carmichael released his solo debut EP album Five Songs in 2012, and also produced Sara Bareilles‘ 2004 song “Come Round Soon” off her album Careful Confessions.

PJ Morton

Growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana with father Canadian-American gospel singer Bishop Paul S. Morton and mother Debra Brown Morton, a pastor of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church, Morton’s love for music was piqued at a young age. After graduation from Morehouse College with a marketing degree in 2003, Morton focused solely on his solo music and released Emotions in 2005, before going on to form The PJ Morton Band, which released one album, Perfect Song, in 2007. In 2009, he penned a book titled Why Can’t I Sing About Love? The Truth About the Church Against Secular Music, where he relates to his upbringing while discussing religious musicians who pursue careers outside of gospel music.

However, Morton’s dreams came true in 2010 when his friend, who also happened to be Maroon 5’s musical director, Adam Blackstone tapped him to audition for a spot in the band as keyboardist and background vocalist. After filling in for Carmichael during his hiatus, Morton earned a permanent position in the band in 2012.

In addition to establishing his career as the keyboardist in Maroon 5, Morton has also produced and written music for several musicians, including LL Cool J, Jagged Edge, Monica, India.Arie, Jermaine Dupri and — digging back into his roots — many gospel artists.

And Morton, 37, has a lot to look forward to in the month of February. After wrapping his Super Bowl halftime performance on Feb. 3 alongside his bandmates, the keyboardist will hit the Grammy Awards just one week later, where he’s nominated for four honors, including best R&B album for his solo record Gumbo Unplugged.

Mickey Madden

Born in Austin, Texas, the band’s bassist got his start in music while playing in garage band Kara’s Flowers with fellow classmates Levine, Carmichael and Dusick. While Levine and Carmichael went off to college in New York, Madden attended classes at UCLA. But, like the rest, the band was where his heart remained — and committed, at that, as he and Levine are the only members who have consistently been a part of both Kara’s Flowers and Maroon 5.

As a practicing vegan, Madden, 39, is a devoted supporter of Farm Sanctuary, an animal protection organization.

Matt Flynn

As a young boy, Flynn’s first fan was his father, who would watch on and support the drummer as he grew into his talents. After attending San Diego State University, Flynn got his career start playing the drums for many iconic bands, including The B-52’s, Chicago and Gandhi, and also played solo acts for Gavin DeGraw and many more.

In 2004, Flynn was asked to hit the road with Maroon 5 as a touring drummer to fill in for Dusick during his medical departure, before later earning a permanent position in the band thereafter. Flynn began to record with the band in 2006 ahead of the release of their sophomore album, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.

In 2009, Levine also revealed Flynn was he favorite drummer because he “hits hard,” which is “very important” to the frontman.

Flynn, 48, is happily married to wife Heidi Ford. The couple has two kids together, daughter Ryan and son Michael.

Sam Farrar

Born and raised in California, Farrar — Maroon 5’s newest member — was never far from his future as a Hollywood star. A man of many talents, the rocker is known for his capacity to play many instruments, whether it be the guitar or the bass. Early in his career, he kickstarted his career playing bass guitar for American rock band Phantom Planet, best known for their hit song “California,” the theme song for the Fox drama series The O.C.

After meeting and working alongside Carmichael and Valentine in Operation Aloha, a 14-member supergroup, he was added to the Maroon 5 mix around the same time as Morton in 2012 as a touring member filling in for Madden. Later, in 2016, he was asked to play for the band full-time. He was introduced as the band’s seventh member when he was featured on the cover of the Maroon 5’s sixth studio album, Red Pill Blues, in 2017.

Farrar, 40, is married to Stephanie Eitel, who was formerly a member of the band Agent Sparks. In August 2009, they welcomed their first child, daughter Vesper Pearl. In January 2014, they welcomed their son Flynn Roscoe.
