“The Idea of You ”Adaptation: What We Know So Far

The film is based on Robinne Lee's novel of the same name and is rumored to be inspired by Harry Styles fan fiction

Things are getting steamy between Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine in The Idea of You.

Based on the Robinne Lee novel of the same name, the new film follows Hathaway as a divorced mother who strikes up a romance with a young pop star (Galitzine) after meeting him at Coachella.

Plans for the movie adaptation were first announced in 2018 and casting announcements were made several years later in 2022.

Fans got the first look at Hathaway and Galitzine in character as they were seen filming a steamy scene in October 2022 in photos obtained by E! News, and now, Prime Video has shared the official trailer.

What is The Idea of You about?

Based on the Robinne Lee novel of the same name, the film centers around Solène Marchand (Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mother who takes her 16-year-old daughter to Coachella. During her time at the festival, she comes in contact with a 24-year-old boy band singer named Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), with whom she eventually starts a romance.

Is The Idea of You based on Harry Styles fan fiction?

Many have speculated that the book is based on Harry Styles fan fiction, with the character of Hayes having many similarities to the former One Direction singer, right down to his many tattoos.

Though the author says the book is not based on fan fiction, she did share that she was inspired by Styles when she created the character of Hayes. Speaking with Vogue in December 2020, she said she made Hayes into her “dream guy” including a mix of “Prince Harry-meets-Harry [Styles]” and a little bit of Eddie Redmayne.

However, she maintains The Idea of You was “never supposed to be a book about Harry Styles ... it was supposed to be a story about a woman approaching 40 and reclaiming her sexuality and rediscovering herself, just at the point that society traditionally writes women off as desirable and viable and whole.”

Who is in The Idea of You cast?

Hathaway plays Solène Marchand (whose name is Sophie in the book), while Galitzine will play her love interest Hayes Campbell. The cast also includes Mathilda Gianopoulos, Ella Rubin, Annie Mumolo, Reid Scott, Perry Mattfeld, Jordan Aaron Hall, Jaiden Anthony, Raymond Cham, Vik White and Dakota Adan, per Deadline.

Who is directing The Idea of You?

The film is being directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) from a script by Jennifer Westfeldt (Friends with Kids).

When did The Idea of You film?

Production for the film first began in October 2022, at which time Hathaway and Galitzine were photographed filming a scene in which Galitzine wrapped his arm around Hathaway. Later that month, they were photographed kissing in the rain during a steamy onscreen moment.

In December 2022, Galitzine confirmed filming had wrapped as he posted a handful of behind-the-scenes photos on his Instagram profile.

Is there a trailer for The Idea of You?

The first glimpse of the movie was released in December 2023 as Prime Video shared the teaser for their 2024 slate. In the clip, fans can see Hathaway and Galitzine sharing a poolside embrace chair and another moment in which they begin to kiss.

The official trailer was released in March 2024, showing how Solène and Hayes' relationship comes to be.

When will The Idea of You be released?

The film will be released on May 2 and will be available to stream on Prime Video.
