Halloweentown, only the fourth Disney Channel original movie ever made, has a cult following of would-be Halloweentown residents. The film series about the magical Cromwell family have carved a special place in the hearts of many for stories that are equally heartwarming and surprisingly creepy.

The Halloweentown movies have a sort of Return to Oz-level of chilling side characters. It's certainly a movie for kids, but the monstrous-but-still-kind Halloweentown residents make these the kinds of movies that can unexpectedly sneak into your nightmares.

There's a reason that these straight-to-TV movies are still watched today. Here's everything you need to know about the Halloweentown movies.

How many Halloweentown movies are there?

Disney's Halloweentown series has four films, released over an eight-year span, starting with the original in 1998. Halloweentown was followed by Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge in 2001, Halloweentown High in 2004, and the series concluded (at least for now) with Return to Halloweentown in 2006.

Who is in the cast of Halloweentown?

The first film stars Kimberly J. Brown as Marnie Piper. Joey Zimmerman plays Marnie's younger brother, Dylan Piper, and Emily Roeske plays her younger sister, Sophie. Debbie Reynolds plays Marnie's witchy grandmother, Aggie Cromwell, and her mother is played by Judith Hoag. Phillip Van Dyke plays Marnie's admirer Luke, and Robin Thomas plays the villainous warlock Kalabar.

Everyone but Thomas returns for Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, which also features Daniel Kountz as Kal and Blu Mankuma as Gort.

The main cast sticks around until the fourth film, Return to Halloweentown, when Sara Paxton replaced Brown as Marnie. Zimmerman, Reynolds, and Hoag all return to their roles as Dylan, Aggie, and the mother, Gwen. Sophie, however, is scuttled.

What's the plot of Halloweentown?

In the first movie, Marnie discovers she's a witch living in the mortal world when her grandmother, Aggie, comes to visit. Gwen, Marnie's mother, has kept her kids in the mortal world and doesn't wish to associate with the magic-rich Halloweentown ever again.

Marnie and her siblings, Dylan and Sophie, follow Aggie back to Halloweentown and help their grandmother uncover the evil plans of Kalabar, who thinks the residents of Halloweentown should take over the mortal world.

In the second film, Aggie moves in with the Cromwells in the mortal world, helping to train the kids in their newly discovered magical abilities. Marnie makes friends with a young man named Kal, who is obviously a suspicious character to everyone except the Cromwell kids. A series of mysterious events leads Marnie and Aggie back to Halloweentown, where they discover that it has been turned black and white, the color completely drained from its residents. They discover that this is the work of Kal, who is — bum bum bum! — the son of Kalabar, looking to complete his dad's nefarious plan for the mortal world and exact revenge on Halloweentown.

The third film, Halloweentown High, has Marnie initiating a student exchange program between the mortal world and Halloweentown. The Halloweentown Council is skeptical of the plan, but Marnie bets "all the Cromwell magic" that the plan will work. You know that's not going to work out well.

The series concludes with Return to Halloweentown, the only movie where some of the original core cast does not, ahem, return to Halloweentown. Now 18, Marnie is offered a scholarship to Halloweentown's Witch University, aka Witch U. Marnie accepts the scholarship, to her mother's chagrin.

But Witch U is far less exciting than it sounds. Students aren't even allowed to use magic. (That winds up being Marnie's fault. It's a result of the little experiment she ran in the last movie.) Looking for some excitement, Marnie discovers a magic box with ties to her family, but the Sinister Sisters have plans to use it against her. Also, Dylan is a dog for most of the movie. Woof.
