After the success of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation, the beloved post-apocalyptic video game Fallout is next to get the TV treatment. The new series, simply titled Fallout, will premiere on Prime Video in April, 2024 and will feature an original story set in the now-extensive Fallout universe.

The role playing series, which has seen five main iterations and several in-universe spinoff games from 1997 to today, follows an alternate universe in which catastrophic nuclear war devastates the United States and beyond; survivors dwell in fallout shelters called “Vaults” and search for resources above ground in a vast expanse called “The Wasteland.”

The new series will be set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles and is executive produced by Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Here’s everything we know about the adaptation so far.

What Is the Fallout TV Show About?

The TV series is confirmed to be a new, original story in the Fallout universe, as opposed to an adaptation of one of the series’ pre-existing games. While the details of Fallout‘s plot are still unknown, we know it’ll take place in Los Angeles — meaning the show will likely acknowledge Fallout‘s fictitious southwest faction, the New California Republic. Walton Goggins has been confirmed to play a “ghoul” in the series, so the game’s creepy humanoids will be returning as well.

When Does the Fallout TV Show Premiere, and Where?

Fallout premieres on Prime Video on April 12th, 2024.

Who Is in the Fallout TV Show?

An array of actors are confirmed to appear in Fallout, and a few character names are known as well. The most notable include Kyle MacLachlan, Walton Goggins, Yellowjackets‘ Ella Purnell, LOST‘s Michael Emerson, And Just Like That…‘s Sarita Choudhury, Reservation Dogs‘ Matty Cardarople (who will play Huey), and former Disney Channel star Moisés Arias (who will play Norm). Also set to appear are Mike Doyle (Mr. Spencer), Aaron Moten (Maximus), Johnny Pemberton (Thaddeus), Cherien Dabis (Birdie), Dale Dickey (Ma June), Rodrigo Luzzi (Reg), Annabel O’Hagan (Steph), Leslie Uggams, Zach Cherry, Xelia Mendes-Jones, and more.

Though Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are executive producers, the co-showrunners of Fallout are Geneva Robertson-Dworet (screenwriter for Captain Marvel and Tomb Raider) and Graham Wagner (writer on The Office, Portlandia, and Baskets). Nolan is also confirmed to direct Fallout‘s first three episodes as well.

What’s the History Behind the Fallout Games?

Fallout was first developed and published by Interplay Entertainment in 1997, who released the sequel Fallout 2 in 1998 and a spinoff for both PC and home consoles, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. After Interplay licensed the Fallout rights to Bethesda Softworks in 2008, Bethesda released the long-awaited Fallout 3 and expanded the Fallout universe significantly with spinoffs Fallout: New Vegas (2010), Fallout: Shelter (2015), and Fallout 76 (2018). The last entry in Fallout‘s main series came in 2015 with Fallout 4. According to longtime developer Todd Howard, Fallout 5 will enter production after the completion of another Bethesda game, The Elder Scrolls VI.

Has Fallout Been Adapted Before?

Since Fallout‘s inception in 1997, there’ve been rumblings of a feature film adaptation; the game’s original developer and publisher Interplay Entertainment established a film division and attempted to adapt it, but a film never materialized. After Bethesda Softworks acquired the rights to the game, they similarly expressed interest in an adaptation, but no film was made. Meanwhile, multiple game spinoffs like Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout: Shelter, and most recently Fallout 76 continued the expansion of the Fallout universe. Now, Prime Video’s Fallout serves as the game’s first official screen adaptation.

Where Can I Watch the trailer for the Fallout TV Show?
