The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting even more super than it was before.

Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in March 2019, fans have speculated about the future of the Deadpool franchise, especially in light of the massive success it saw from the original film in 2016 and its 2018 sequel.

But have no fear superhero stans! Ryan Reynolds and his titular role are in good hands as Deadpool & Wolverine, the third Deadpool film, is slated to make its MCU debut this year. In addition to teaming up with Marvel Studios, Reynolds is set to reunite with Shawn Levy who's helming the film. Oh, and who else is getting in on the action? Hugh Jackman, of course.

In July 2023, Reynolds and Jackman both posted a photo on their Instagram Stories of themselves in character as Deadpool and Wolverine. The snap, which featured the two actors walking toward the camera, was taken while they filmed scenes in London. "Don't blink," Reynolds and Jackman wrote with the image.

During the 2024 Super Bowl, Reynolds shared the first teaser trailer for the film. The full trailer for the film released in April 2024.

Little plot details have been disclosed for Deadpool & Wolverine, however, the official synopsis for the movie teases that it follows Wolverine who is "recovering from his injuries when he crosses paths with the loudmouth, Deadpool." They eventually decide to "team up to defeat a common enemy."

In true MCU fashion, there will be no shortage of action! Jackman confirmed that fact when speaking to PEOPLE in October 2022, where he also said, "I'll probably have more fun on this movie than any other I've ever done."

"I think being on set with [Ryan] every day and those two on film in every city together everyday … I think it's fair to say they'll be punching the s--- out of each other the whole time," Jackman told PEOPLE exclusively.

In January 2022, the actor spoke about the project again, explaining that the film, which is set prior to the events of the 2017 film Logan, will be a unique experience for his character.

"When I keep thinking of me and Ryan, of Deadpool and Wolverine, which are classic comic-book rivals, there's also a dynamic that I've never really got to do before as Wolverine. I just thought, 'This is gonna be fun. Something I've never done before. I can't wait.' "

Although Reynold's confirmed that Taylor Swift is not joining the cast of Deadpool & Wolverine, he did confirm that Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine, a character the actor has become synonymous with since 2000's X-Men.

This will mark the 10th time Jackman has played the clawed character, following James Mangold's 2017 gritty R-rated Logan. But despite his long history as Wolverine, Reynolds is passionate about making the character's Deadpool debut feel new.

"His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning," said Reynolds in a video posted to Twitter announcing the casting news.

On Valentine's Day in 2023, Reynolds announced that Emma Corrin, known for their Emmy-nominated work as Princess Diana in The Crown, is joining the Deadpool 3 cast. Character details were not revealed, but The Hollywood Reporter notes that the role is believed to be the villain.

"New addition to the family! The Deadpool family, for clarity," Reynolds wrote. "Which is just like a real family except with less swearing… Welcome, Emma Corrin!"

In July 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Jennifer Garner, who previously shared the screen with Reynolds in The Adam Project, will reprise her role as Elektra, 20 years after starring in 2003's Daredevil alongside Ben Affleck.

When will Deadpool & Wolverine take place?

Seeing as Wolverine actually dies in Logan, fans have also speculated that the film will take place prior to the events of the 2017 film.

Although the exact timing has yet to be confirmed, Reynolds did reassure fans that "Logan takes place in 2029," clarifying that it's a "totally separate thing. "Logan died in Logan. Not touching that," the actor said in a video.

Who is directing Deadpool & Wolverine?

Shawn Levy is set to direct the film, taking over the role from David Leitch, who cited scheduling as his reason for not returning for the third installment. Although directing Deadpool is a first for Levy, it's not his first collaboration with the superhero star.

Reynolds and Levy unforgettably joined forces in 20th Century's Free Guy and Netflix's The Adam Project. Deadpool & Wolverine will simply complete the hat trick for the talented team.

Following Bob's Burgers' Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin exit from the film, the script will be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who have writing credits on the first two Deadpool films.

On Jan. 24, 2024, Reynolds announced that filming had wrapped as he posted a heartfelt tribute on social media. "The suit hides the blood. Also sweat... But today, with Deadpool wrapping, it's mostly tears," he wrote. "A giant and forever thanks to the cast and crew of our film who battled wind, rain, strikes and @RealHughJackman ... all under the stalwart leadership of @ShawnLevyDirect."

"I got to make a movie with my closest pals and that doesn't happen very often," he concluded the post. "See ya July 26th... ⚔️🥺⚔️"

The new footage from the movie shows Deadpool approaching Logan at a bar to ask for help saving the world, but it doesn't take long before Logan's claws come out. Eventually, Deadpool does manage to recruit Wolverine, promising plenty of action and many fourth-wall breaking moments along the way.
