In late February of this year, veteran hitmakers Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak teamed up to form a supergroup called Silk Sonic. The arrival of their debut single, “Leave the Door Open,” was accompanied by the official announcement of an upcoming album, which immediately became one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2021.

Simply titled An Evening with Silk Sonic, the collaborative project will also contain Mars and .Paak’s summer jam, “Skate,” as well as a forthcoming single titled “Smokin Out the Window.”

The duo has described the album’s sound as based in the ’60s and ’70s, “the old school.” Inspired by Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and Prince, it’s meant to create feel-good vibes in “in times like the time we’re in right now.”

Below, Consequence has rounded up everything there is to know about Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s Silk Sonic album — from its release date and title to the cover art.

The Release Date

During an August interview with Rolling Stone, Mars and .Paak said they were targeting a January 2022 release. On Friday (October 8th), Silk Sonic officially announced their debut album will be arriving on November 12th.

The Title

A press release accompanying the release of “Leave The Door Open” officially revealed the album would be titled An Evening with Silk Sonic.

The Cover Art

While first announcing the joint project back in late February, Mars debuted the album cover on social media. It’s a sketch depicting each artist’s head in a throwback art style, while also revealing the involvement of Bootsy Collins as a special guest host.

The Musical Content

While speaking to Rolling Stone, .Paak described the “foundation” of Silk Sonic’s sound as based in the ’60s and ’70s, “the old school.” Their main influences are even stamped permanently on his chest, by way of a tattoo depicting Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and Prince, who he compared to Marvel’s The Avengers.

Mars added that they aimed to create feel-good vibes, even scrapping a song containing “heavier” subject matter. “I hope you don’t flip the shit I’m about to say around and say, ‘These dudes are deep as a puddle,'” he stated. “It’s not that. It’s just that we feel our purpose is this. We need to light up a stage, put the fear of God in anyone performing before us or after us, and bring so much joy to the people we’re in front of and the people listening. Especially in times like the time we’re in right now.”

He added, “If it makes us feel good, and resonates with us, that’s gonna be infectious and make other people feel good — and that’s our jobs as entertainers.”

The Singles

Mars and .Paak launched Silk Sonic with the release of “Leave the Door Open” on March 5th. The lead single peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was performed by the duo at a series of awards shows including the Grammys, the iHeartRadio Music Awards, and BET Awards.

In July, they returned with “Skate,” which was named our Song of the Week. Our very own Mary Siroky described the track as “the perfect late season bop, all the joyful energy of a cookout, rooftop party, or (naturally) a long skate session under palm trees packed into three and a half minutes.”

On November 1st, Silk Sonic announced the third single from the album, titled “Smokin Out the Window” would be out on November 5th.
