The British award show has already made waves with some surprising nominations that broke expectations. However, many things played out as expected, like Oppenheimer's dominance. Here is everything you need to know about the 2024 BAFTA Awards.

What's with all the fervor over BAFTA snubs and surprises?

The BAFTA nominations shocked many, namely the snubs. The Best Director category did not include nominations for Lanthimos or Scorsese, as mentioned above. Gerwig was also excluded from that list, despite having earned nominations in the category at the Directors Guild of America and the Golden Globes. Another notable snub was Gladstone, who has already been grabbing awards for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.

With many notable omissions, there must also be unexpected nominations. Among them was Fantasia Barrino's Best Actress nomination for The Color Purple. Additionally, Saltburn actors Barry Keoghan, Rosamund Pike, and Jacob Elordi all grabbed nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. Andrew Haigh's Best Director nomination for All of Us Strangers also comes as a mild surprise, given the high-profile directors who weren't nominated.

Moreover, American Fiction earned just a single BAFTA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. It earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Jeffrey Wright, and Best Supporting Actor for Sterling K. Brown.

Many attribute the British Academy straying from the norm with its nominations because of how they're selected, by a mix of small juries and overall membership votes.

Who is performing at the 2024 BAFTA Awards?

The complete list of performers has yet to be unveiled, but the award show will feature Sophie Ellis-Bextor performing "Murder on the Dance Floor." The 23-year-old song took on new life in 2023 after it was used in a climactic scene of Saltburn. "I am so excited. I will be performing at the EE BAFTAs 2024," the singer said on Instagram. "I'm already practicing some looks, and I cannot wait."
